Mary Lazich versus democracy
The creepiest thing about Republican Party of Wisconsin attempts to game the recall process, in vain hope that they might be able to save Gov. Scott Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch from an accountability moment, is the determination of the most partisan Republicans to erect barriers to democracy itself.
The draconian voter ID law that Republicans forced through the Legislature, and that Walker signed into law, was designed to make it significantly harder for students, the elderly, low-income voters and rural voters to participate in elections. Universally condemned by good-government groups, and now the subject of a major lawsuit, the voter ID law is anti-democratic on its face.
The same goes for the legislation proposed by state Sen. Mary Lazich, R-New Berlin, to make it harder to circulate and certify recall petitions. How so? With an unprecedented requirement that petitions with recall signatures be officially notarized.
The proposal by Lazich is unnecessary, burdensome and clearly designed to serve the interests of Walker and Kleefisch, as they face the threat of a recall drive that is to launch Nov. 15.
