Ancient 5200-year-old 'takeout' window discovered
Ancient 5200-year-old 'takeout' window discovered
Window may have been used to distribute grain, lentils and beer and wine along with sling bullets.

Some 5,200 years ago, in the mountains of western Iran, people may have used takeout windows to get food and weapons, newly presented research suggests.

But rather than the greasy hamburgers and fries, it appears the inhabitants of the site ordered up goat, grain and even bullets, among other items.

The find was made at Godin Tepe, an archaeological site that was excavated in the 1960s and 1970s by a team led by T. Cuyler Young Jr., a curator at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada, who died in 2006.

A team of researchers took up his work after he died and recently published the results of the excavation, along with more recent research on the artifacts, in the book "On the High Road: The History of Godin Tepe" (Hilary Gopnik and Mitchell Rothman, Mazda Publishers, 2011). In addition a symposium was held recently where the takeout windows, among other research finds at Godin Tepe, were discussed.

3. The Romans had fast-food joints, too.
They were little buffets with a varsity of quick foods.

4. Yes. They were pretty common in areas near insulae, since those buildings were such
fire hazards people were safer buying food cooked elsewhere. (Although some people did try cooking in them, frequently to their detriment.)

6. I find it scary the similarities between Roman society and our own.

It seems like all advanced societies develop a lowest common denominator of cheap entertainment and fast food, LOL!

I've been reading a biography of Caesar and he seems to have been the leading edge of a generation that reminds me so much of the Boomers with regards to culture it's funny. Reading up on the antics of the "Clodius Club" and how older Romans were aghast about it sounds like how older folks in the 60s and 70s had the vapors about the Counterculture.

Caesar started a fashion trend of young Romans wearing tunics under their togas that had long, frilly sleeves and it drove older people nuts. Cicero loved making fun of them, calling them the "cool, smart set".
