Looks like the Brits are trying to get to the Multiverse
A laser powerful enough to tear apart the fabric of space could be built in Britain.
The major scientific project will follow in the footsteps of the Large Hadron Collider and will answer questions about the universe.
The laser will be capable of producing a beam of light so intense that it will be similar to the light the earth receives from the sun but focused on a speck smaller than a pin prick.
Extreme: A laser powerful enough to tear apart the fabric of space could be built in Britain
Scientists say it will be so powerful they will be able to boil the very fabric of space and create a vacuum.
A vacuum fizzles with mysterious particles that come in and out of existence but the phenomenon happens so fast that no-one has ever actually been able to prove it.
It is hoped the Extreme Light Infrastructure Ultra-High Field Facility would allow scientists to prove the particles are real by pulling the vacuum fabric apart.
Scientists even believe it might help them to prove whether other dimensions actually exist.

Uh, is this really a good idea? What if some weird stuff comes out of it. Are we ready for an inter dimensional war? Well, one good thing is that if Aliens ever do attack, we will have and awesome weapon. All thanks to SCIENCE!

2. Also
I hope it doesn't colapse our universe. I hear the test date is 12/31/2012, lol.

6. I think the Earth is scheduled to end
on 12/21/12. They'll never get to do their test.

3. Cool!
The unification of physics may yet be solved during the life time of those who are young now.

10. Yes this is a good idea
All they are trying to do is prove that some energy goes "missing" on a quantum level. The theory being that the energy/particle(s) move from our universe into another one.

This one paragraph:

A vacuum fizzles with mysterious particles that come in and out of existence but the phenomenon happens so fast that no-one has ever actually been able to prove it.

seems to indicate that they expect the opposite effect to happen also. That they will "pull" energy/particles from another universe (or universes) into ours.

Nothing dangerous will come out of this rift. We are talking about such small energies that it is going to be tough to measure. This isn't some gateway to hell filled with demons that will require the Ghostbusters to fix.

I look forward to hearing about the results of this experiment. I'm not a Multiverse guy but would love to see some more concrete evidence to prove me wrong (but I'm not holding my breath).

12. Everyone knows you can't use a laser to jump through the Multiverse.
You need the Cosmic Treadmill for that.

13. Meanwhile, fish poison their lake to better understand water.
Just NOT a good idea to experiment on the medium in which you live.
