The Occupiers’ Responsive Chord

MONDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2011

- snip -

Why? Because for the first time in more than half a century, a broad cross-section of the American public is talking about the concentration of income, wealth, and political power at the top.

Score a big one for the Occupiers.

Even more startling is the change in public opinion. Not since the 1930s has a majority of Americans called for redistribution of income or wealth. But according to a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, an astounding 66 percent of Americans said the nation’s wealth should be more evenly distributed.

- snip -

I remember the days when even raising the subject of inequality made you a “class warrior.” Now, it seems, most Americans have become class warriors.

1. Didn't we fight a revolution to get out from under the tyranny of the
ruling class which is, in modern times, the 1%.....

If we don't do something soon, the sons and daughters of the 1% will feel entitled and so we will build fortresses real and imagined around their privilege and wealth.

7. The revolution was fought by the ruling class to get out from under the tyranny of Great Britain
The Founding Fathers were largely drawn from among the upper and upper-middle class of the colonies. They were merchants, landowners, plantation owners, and Ben Franklin was a printer, the media mogul of his day.

were hardly the ruling class.

17. No kidding....the Koch brothers and others who bankrolled the *TeaBag Party
probably regret ever giving the american people the idea of protesting. Oh you mean we can hold demonstrations, just like old times? Thanks for the suggestion, TeaBaggers!

*(They called themselves teabaggers first)

4. That's encouraging, not to mention surprising
Even more startling is the change in public opinion. Not since the 1930s has a majority of Americans called for redistribution of income or wealth. But according to a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, an astounding 66 percent of Americans said the nation’s wealth should be more evenly distributed.

I never expected it to be that high, not with how controlled the media is on issues like this. I think the internet is really having an effect on the way people think about issues. Even twenty odd years ago, I remember when 'news' was a handful of stations, plus the big three, and Talk Radio in its infancy. And that was all you got where I lived.

6. Yeah, I've had that class war bullshit thrown at me too
They don't seem to understand that, to me, being called a class warrior, is a badge of honor. I'm currently working on a freeway blog that says, YOU ARE THE 99% big enough to cover a whole pedestrian overpass. Why yes, I am a class warrior.

10. What a coincidence!
Even more startling is the change in public opinion. Not since the 1930s has a majority of Americans called for redistribution of income or wealth. But according to a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, an astounding 66 percent of Americans said the nation’s wealth should be more evenly distributed.

16. Then perhaps the 1% should stop laying workers off

while taking all of their money. We can't spend money we don't have.

Plus a lot of people just aren't buying corporate crap anymore. I know that people are trying to get campaigns started to get people to go local and not buy anything from giant soul sucking world destroying corporations on Black Friday, or for Christmas in general.

It's the free market in action. Piss off your customers by destroying their lives and taking away their freedom, and they'll take what money you haven't stolen from them yet to businesses that aren't evil.

18. I totally agree..
I agree that the middle class is where recovery comes from.

I spent the last 35 years getting my raises and
health care cut. And with interest rates so low
people realize they can't retire without SAVING
a lot more money than they used to. I believe
this is why the recovery is so slow.

Trickle-down does not work. Greedy corporate leaders are to fault.
Corporations are not people.
And our congress is bought.

Sorry, my statement could be taken two ways.

Thanks for caring enough to respond!!
