Yahoo News: ‘Car Guy’ Bob Lutz Wants Federal Gas Tax…To Pay for Trains!
Lutz believes the government isn't involved enough in repairing the nation's crumbling infrastructure. Even more surprising, Lutz recommends a "graduated, rising" federal tax on gasoline to help give consumers more certainty about gas prices — and encourage them to buy fuel-efficient vehicles -- with the proceeds (wait for it) to go to pay for upgrades of the nation's aging rail system.

1. Lutz is a "me" guy. No car guy would want more gas taxes.

2. sounds like he wants to buy out a couple of rail car manufactures
there`s a large plant being built in rochelle il to build passenger cars. there`s another one that was supposed to be built in wisconsin before walker took over. that contract was pulled when walker turned down the rail money.

amtrak`s fleet aging and general motors want a piece of the action building of new passenger cars.

3. Gas is already too expensive. Charging people long before there are any alternatives
Edited on Tue Nov-01-11 12:40 PM by Shagbark Hickory
is just wrong in my book.

As it is, people don't have a choice of buying an affordable car that is so fuel efficient that it would end up being cheaper than before gas prices skyrocketed in 2004.

More gas tax won't convince people to buy some car that's better on gas because they don't exist.

Instead of kicking all the working people in the balls with a gas tax, how about taxing the 1% their fair share and ending loopholes. Now that the wars are coming to an end between the savings there and taxing the rich a fair amount, we should be able to build bullet trains all over the place.
