Elliot Spitzer's suggestion for OWS: Protest State of the States/Union
Edited on Tue Nov-01-11 11:54 AM by mod mom
I watched Elliot Spitzer on KO via Hissy's thread last night:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x630594

and loved his suggestion that with cold weather making Occupies difficult for many, perhaps selecting a day to send a huge message, he suggested the State of the State Addresses/ & the State of the Union address to fill the streets with people while the address is being given. It will get much media coverage. I thought it was an excellent suggestion. What do others think?

3. YES. Preferably while naked except for black socks.
That would make even more of an impact.

6. I hate it for several reasons
One is that we've simply found that mass marches don't work. Here today, gone tomorrow -- the mass media ignore them, and it's over.

A second is that a great part of the power of OWS is that it's about individuals. Individuals with faces and names and their own distinctive styles and enthusiasms that come across on the livestream. The protests are small enough to force even the mainstream media to get down there and talk to the people, rather than photographing them from a distance.

OWS is also not about making demands. It's about creating a new world -- living in new ways, relating to one another in new ways. As we used to say back in the 60s, the medium is the message -- and the medium in this case is the occupations themselves. To give all that up and adopt the failed methods of the past would be an enormous step backwards.

OWS is at its heart about hope and change -- real hope and real change -- and it sends that message by living those things every day, not by petitioning government to grant them from above.

Spitzer has a useful perspective on certain things -- but why would you want to take instruction on how to protest from an ex-governor?

7. I think of the massive protests in Wisc & Ohio last winter and I think it would ruin
the GOP Governors (thinking again of WI & OH) message in that they would share the media stage w protesters.

BTW it wasn't necessarily the messenger but the the suggestion that I liked.
