The White House yesterday announced two new picks to serve as commissioners on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC): Democrat Jessica Rosenworcel and Republican Ajit Pai. If confirmed, Rosenworcel would take Michael Copps' spot, which comes free at the end of the year when his term expires, and Pai would take over the spot vacated by Meredith Attwell Baker when she moved from government regulator to Comcast regulatory affairs earlier this year—shortly after voting to approve Comcast's acquisition of NBC.
Rosenworcel currently serves as Senior Communications Counsel for the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, and she previously spent eight years doing legal work at the FCC (including some as an aide to Commissioner Copps).
Pai is currently a partner at powerhouse law firm Jenner & Block, but he too has logged years of legal work at the FCC. Pai was formerly the Deputy General Counsel at the FCC and has served as an aide to the Senate Judiciary Committee. He has also been Associate General Counsel at Verizon.
Pai and Rosenworcel are both fairly young and could change the dynamics of the five-member Commission. Both have already received support from groups like the Consumer Electronics Association, but each needs confirmation from the Senate before assuming a new role at the FCC.
