Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has an interesting take on Herman Cain’s growing scandal: honestly, he says, these says it seems like women can’t take a joke.

“There are people now who hesitate to tell a joke to a woman in the workplace, any kind of joke, because it could be interpreted incorrectly,” he told the National Review. “I don’t. I’m very cautious.”

whether the jokes are about race, age, gender or sex or religion or other very personal things.

I remember sitting at a lunch with some associates who were maybe 35 years younger than I was. They were ridiculing an elderly weatherman on one of the local stations. I couldn't say anything, but I felt very uncomfortable with them after that. It caused a lot of problems for me. I just wasn't comfortable with them.

One joke that misfires is just a bad joke. A pattern of misogynist jokes is actually pulling rank by talking dirty, and it only works one way. If the woman who is the butt of this kind of workplace humiliation strategy objects, she's a prude. If she answers in kind, she's a slut. Either way, the woman loses, and that's exactly why men do this.

(As an aside, I think men and women are equally capable of pulling quid pro quo harassment, in which the deal is put out or suffer the consequences. The reason we don't see more of it from women is that there are fewer in positions of power.)
