High-profile Occupy Denver protester quits over ideological differences
By Weston Gentry
The Denver Post

Infighting, backbiting and people she viewed as violent opportunists led one of Occupy Denver's most visible participants to quit the local movement after the peaceful protest turned violent Saturday.

Rebecca "Becca" Chavez, 29, announced on Twitter on Sunday afternoon, "I support Occupy Wall Street whole-heartedly but I cannot, at present, support, endorse, or be a part of Occupy Denver."

She wouldn't comment further on her reasoning, but other protesters agree that her exit was precipitated by ideological differences.

True to keeping the movement faceless, Chavez intentionally never called herself a leader, but no one at Occupy Denver would disagree that she was influential.

Here's the OP I posted at the time.

I don't claim to know what's happening up there. And in the long run, it might make no difference at all. For the moment, this power struggle gives opponents of OD a space to exploit but that probably comes with the territory.

1. Plants co-opting the movement...

and attempting to re-focus it to within the boundaries of the status quo narrative, which will render it toothless. I'm sad to see this woman had to walk away.

2. Standard COINTELPRO fare

The FBI divided the Black Panthers by sending anonymous letters to those within the movement warning them that this person or that person was out to 'get' them. This ratcheted up the level of distrust among the members. Agents provocateur within the group fanned the flames by provoking the parties involved into violence which led to the deaths of several innocent members at the hands of the group.

Beware of rumors, innuendo, anonymous letters and provocateurs seeking to incite protesters and Police. We have already seen how 'tips' by 'outside sources' caused the Oakland Police to attack with extreme and unnecessary violence.

4. I know of some Ron Paul supporters who have been
advocating violence at these events - don't know if they had anything to do with this, but I wouldn't be surprised...

5. There is one active account on twitter, @AngryVoters
that seems really angry, that spams the stream for days with one message, and I wouldn't be surprised if he believes he is right, to hell with everyone else and is involved in this flap.

6. something went on in Portland, too
There was a story in the paper about $20,000 being missing from the funds that had been donated, and that an individual had collected funds diverted to his own paypal account, yada yada. Couple of days later there was a story about how there wasn't really a problem, just a matter of disorganization because of no official structure.

Reporters are always looking for drama for a story.
