Around 2pm Monday I get called regarding a woman and a baby in a car
in one of our parking areas/bus stop/coffee shop area since 7am. I check on the occupants, yes a 20 something female and an 8-month old baby. It is about 40 degrees at 2pm, so it was pretty cool at 7am.

I ask her if all is ok and try to determine why she is there all day. She says her husband is our new employee in orientation that day. She said they are very low on gas and she was afraid of running out so they are waiting for him to get off work then will go get some gas and go apt. hunting.

I briefed my boss because I feared they were living in the car (blankets and clothing inside) and it will be two weeks before the guy sees a paycheck and it is supposed to get COLD this week. (30's in Seattle area) My boss gave me some money and asked me to get the gas can we use to help visitors and patients and put gas in the car and give her some money and try to talk to the husband to determine if we need to feed and house them.
(My respect for my boss bounded at that moment. He always wants to be the tough guy!)

I get gas and put it in the car and she about cries and calls me an angel. I then give her around 15 dollars and she blurts out: "This is dinner! God Bless you" and hugs me. My heard broke, I gave her twenty more and told her her husband is one of us and we like to take care of our own.

I told my wife and God bless her, she said: We have two bedrooms and a crib, they are welcome here. (She is the angel, not me!)

My God, this economy has to turn around at some point. no one should be sleeping in a car hungry in AMERICA god damn it.

109. Remember everyone, it's really easy to donate to food banks! (The GOOD banks)
Sneaking into this thread at the top, to remind everyone that many, many grocery stores provide the opportunity to donate to local food banks. Many include the option to donate cash credits to the stores for the food banks, which the food banks can then use for whatever they're running short of!

Google the name of your county and "food bank". You'll find local food banks' websites listing stores which participate and asking your help in volunteering to help with collections. The banks will also provide wish lists of suggested product donations.

To Rusty Dog in Seattle - thanks for sharing what happened - I've forwarded your post to about 60 people on my email list with a reminder to keep an eye out for people in need of help and "do unto others".

And re grocery stores in Seattle - I was visiting my son a few years back (he lives in Fremont) and when we went to the grocery store, he froze dead in his tracks in the parking lot and told me in awe that the guy just coming out of the entrance was Dave Matthews.

10. ya. but look at the chain of kindness.
one person notices and cares enough to send you out. you care enough to check out the situation and say something to boss. boss cares enough to fnd solutions. you continue with your caring to implement solutions and mention to your wife who in turn, cares enough to offer house.

lots of caring going on.

one person along the chain could have stopped all the progress.

110. Most humans are decent, compassionate people.
Sometimes it takes a devastating crisis like that of our current world situation to bring out the best that is in us.

And I see OWS as an expression of the best that is in the human spirit. Nobody is out there in the cold just trying to get something for themselves.

I was just venting when I posted this. I get sick and tired of hearing about how people like to live on the gravy train of food stamps and 4.50 a day for food stamps...This young guy has a new family and he is willing to work. He did not whine in the job interview, he sounded upbeat and positive and we liked how he presented himself. Oh, he is recently out of the military too. He moved across the state for this job to put his family in a better location and better financial picture. He is America's future, we have to help it along sometimes.

19. Something similar happened to me this week.
Not to hijack your story, but I think this is more common than we want to admit, desperate people living in the last place they have, their cars. I live in what is a semi-rural area of my county. We have a private road for about five properties that connects to the county road. I was going out shopping one morning when I saw a car that was partially blocking the private road from the county road. When I got down to the car, I saw four adults and a child or what seemed to be a multi-generational family. I asked the driver if he needed any help. He said they had run out of gas and some lady had offered to get them some gas. I could tell from the state of their clothing and grooming that they seemed homeless. He said something about it being a horrible day for them and they didn't need this on top of it. I asked if he needed to make a phone call. He said they had one of those prepaid cell phones and he thanked me. I asked if he needed money and he said they needed to get gas once they could get going. I dug into my purse and unfortunately all I had was $7 because I usually shop with plastic and never have much cash on me.

He thanked me and asked for an address so he could repay me when he got some cash. I told him to forget it and wished him well. I went on my way and did my shopping. I also got an extra $40 in cash in case they were still on the road when I got back. They were gone though. Afterwards, I was talking to my step daughter and she brought up the subject of the stranded family. It turns out she was the lady who went to get them gas. She also found out that they were on their way for a job for one of the men that they were told about by a church social worker when they ran out of gas. She and another neighbor who came by at the time managed to fish into their pockets and pulled out another $30 to add to my $7 to give to them. At least it would get them some gas and maybe a meal.

The whole incident bothered me all day. I had just gassed up the day before at $3.77 a gal. for gas. How do poor unemployed people who have only their cars to live in come up with that kind of money so they can look for work and try to find services to help them? I really don't think our multi-millionaire legislators have a clue or do they even care?

60. Had something similar a few years ago
stopping very early AM (about 4 or so) for gas. A guy came up to me asking for a few bucks for gasoline for his truck, which was pretty old & beat up. I too carry only a few dollars and rely on plastic for my purchases. I told him honestly that I didn't have much cash, but to pull over to the pump & used my credit card to buy him a few gallons. He asked for an address (which frankly I didn't want to give out) to send me the money & I told him to simply help out the next person he saw that needed it.

I am just the guy who does the thing.

Just as was your response to the situation that you encountered, it was the only reasonable thing to do at the time. I have had this happen a few times to me while on the way to work when I stop for gas (trying to beat the usual Tuesday afternoon price jumps). I have found it to be the best response I can think of at the time.

You went far above & beyond and I applaud your actions.

In answer to your last question--not only do the multi-millionaire legislators not have a clue, they simply don't care about the dire straits so many of us are in. I'd like to say shame on them to their faces, but they wouldn't care about that, either. I know we're not supposed to hate, but boy, do they bring me to the edge!

BTW, congrats on the 8th anniversary of the day you joined DU. Hope you don't mind a personal note, but this is my late sister's birthday. She left us far too soon, but had she stayed around, she'd have done exactly what you did for these folks. Good to know there are those like you who consider it a privilege to help those in need.

Blessings.

31. Make sure to tell him
Edited on Tue Nov-01-11 10:21 PM by Cal Carpenter
that it's the system that's messed up, that he isn't alone, that it isn't his fault.

People are so hard on themselves, but the thing is you can do everything right, work hard, follow the rules, and still get screwed. And even if he (or anyone in that position) made a mistake or two along the way, no one should live in their car, no one should live with the fear of homelessness or all the insecurity that comes along with being a regular, working person in America.

If you get a chance, just let him know it's not his fault and he's not alone.

39. Thank you
In personal and work capacities I have spent a lot of time with many, many people who are having a tough time. It breaks my heart how many people internalize the blame for their struggles.

The reality is if it were just a matter of personal failings the statistics of homelessness, foreclosure, bankruptcy, debt and other signs of financial struggle wouldn't look like they do. There is a pattern, the source of it is systemic, and while the pain is felt on a personal, individual level the causes are not individual.

Our cultural obsession with 'personal responsibility' makes it really hard for people to talk to other people about this stuff and realize they are not alone. But they are not. There are tens of millions struggling to keep their shit together.

123. Who among us has not had to crash at a friend's place and take foodstamps...
I'm sure some avoided this, but I had to do it for two weeks before I could get an efficiency and a job; and getting the job was easy years ago (86 w.p.m. in 1977). Just remember and relate your "worst" situation, then people can better accept their own plight.

The feeling of pride took a real hit in the 1930s with the depression and colored American men deeply. Some joke about it, or can't relate, but these attitudes and expectations are nearly indelible. And I got a feeling those color-fast hues are getting re-inked today.

Not near the level of this - they had just run out of fuel on an off ramp. I stopped and they gave me some money to get fuel for them. I dropped my family off at home, got the fuel and returned. He wanted to know what he could do to repay me, I said, "Pay it forward and have a good night." I hope they did.

46. I've been in that situation too many times.
Edited on Wed Nov-02-11 01:11 AM by The Doctor.
Both sides of it, actually.

I remember handing a friend $400 when the world was collapsing in on him last year. He didn't want it, so I said I'd take it back in work on my car (he's a genius mechanic).

No matter what, let him know it's not 'free money'. Young guys have a lot of pride and will tend to feel a 'loss of personal value' if they are simply 'given' help.

Given the situation this guy is in, I can tell he's willing to do whatever it takes to make things work. He'll appreciate and be motivated by a personal investment by his coworker.

Finding a way for him to make up for it, especially with something that won't cost him much or can otherwise be a point of levity, is one of the best things you can do for him. He'll have a hard time feeling like a peer otherwise.

I'd suggest you take this seriously, but it's all up to you guys.

Good luck, and well done.

I can add that I do like the other approaches suggested. You're closest to the situation. Whatever you think is going to make this guy feel like he belongs where he's going is best.

in America.

But everyone should be as caring and giving toward others as you, your wife, boss, etc. We will be learning more about that before this is over, and that's a GOOD thing. We'll learn to open our hearts to one another in ways we haven't in the past.

just wanted to mention that --

It separates us from them --

homelessness has been made criminal --

We all have to be watching to help others as much as we can !!

This OP and your post are wonderful reminders of that and "opening our hearts" -- !!

30. Just one thing that concerns me
I'm not sure what line of work you are in, but I presume some sort of public safety based on what you've told us. The thing that concerns me is that this guy being newly hired, might have lost his job based on what you told your boss. Thankfully that is not the case, but what if it had been?

Conscious, or unconscious, there is often a bias against people "down on their luck" as if it is mostly their fault. Herman Cain recently said out loud what many of his RW supporters were/are thinking, "If you're poor, it's your fault"- What if your boss had been one of them?

You obviously know your boss better then anyone here, so you probably had thought this whole thing through and considered the mitigating circumstances (the cold weather, etc.) worth the risk. That, or knew your boss well enough to trust him w/this. Either way, I'm thankful that it worked out ok. Just hope future situations don't call for such measures. :-(

40. The best employee I ever had was in dire straights when I hired him.
I gave him $200 for gas money and $300 so he could make rent. After two month I had already promoted him and he became one of my top managers.

For all the money that my company spent investing in prizes like gift cards and prizes to top sales men a little human compassion turned out to be a far better investment.

44. I live in Seattle and am an advocate for low income families
...please PM me and I will give you my phone number so she can call me. Also please have her call Parents Organizing for Welfare and Economic Rights (POWER): 206-455-9983. Ask for Selene or Mariah or she can leave a message and we will call right back as soon as we can. Make sure to tell them Cat sent her (I am a board member) and we will see what other things we can plug them into until they get on their feet. We at POWER all know what they are going through, we have been there and back!

Oh yeah, here is POWER's website so you know we are not a bunch of kooks or sumpin, lol: http://www.oly-wa.us/power/. We are a nonprofit and advocate for low income families. We also are available to do workshops, etc (no charge) about poverty and the things people can do to help.

You know, what you and your wife are doing is a start, since there just are not enough organizations who are overflowing with cash or resources right now. In a way it is a good thing about what you write because it is now time for people to realize that there AREN'T many places these families can go for help. The ones that exist are already maxed out. It is up to US to reach our our hands and help now. Take it from a long time activist and advocate for low income people, that is about all that is left. ;( ;( ;( ;( ;( ;( ;( ;( ;( ;(

Love,
Cat in Seattle

AWSOME!!!!:yourock:

I hope there is a day when we can end even the thought of someone having to sleep in their car. Geez. What a horrible thought.

People who sleep in their car should be the first to get apartments/homes from the scumbags on Wall St. who created this mess. No I take that back. The bank scumbags who have mansions on the golf course should forfeit their golfcourse view to the homeless. I'm not kidding either.

45. no one should be sleeping in a car hungry in AMERICA god damn it.
Especially not with a baby.

Why can't Wall Street, Mayor Bloomberg and Fox News understand that this is what OWS is about?

Seems so obvious. And this dire poverty is everywhere. Has been since the 1980s. It's horrible.

Remember when Clinton got rid of welfare. Well here we are.

Clinton did a lot of damage. Sorry to say that. I supported him and walked my precinct for him more than once.

I think it is my experience with Clinton that has made me so cautious about Obama. Obama is making the same kinds of mistakes, mistakes that will hurt our country for a long, long time that Clinton made.

Think the three new trade agreements. We haven't recovered from the loss of jobs due to NAFTA yet and here we are with three more of these pythons around our national neck.

What poor judgment. It can only be due to corporate pay-offs.

50. wow. what a powerful story
when will Obama WAKE UP and SEE THE EMERGENCY that has hit the working classes in this nation.

when will representatives in the House stop trying to pass laws about a woman's right to reproductive health care and use the power of their offices to build infrastructure and jobs that pay a living wage.

this story makes me want to cry.

There are many people living in cars and RV's around the Fremont and Ballard neighborhoods; I'm familiar with the location of many of them from going for walks every day around here for the past few years. Sadly, it seems like they get broken into frequently, as most of them have windows covered by cardboard and tape.

73. Fuck! You just made me cry!
Having someone help you in a time of need is something there aren't enough words of gratitude to express how you feel. When someone helps you it changes you inside forever. It restores your belief in the kindness of people and you never forget it because you know first hand that people can be unbelievably kind. I have payed it forward all my life because I got unconditional help when I needed it.

This family will never forget this. It will change their lives forever.

Yeah, it's cry-worthy.

A world that lets anyone sleep in a car with no food, heat, or home is cold. An 8 month old baby doing the same is morally corrupt. That this should happen in the "richest country in the world" is unthinkable.

May this kindness bring all of you bountiful kindness and good fortune in return - many folds if I may add.

Thank you to all the three of you and may God bless you all.

126. Beautiful story
We need more people like you, your wife and your boss in this world. Thank goodness everyone pitched in to help.

It makes me have a little more faith in the world when I hear a story of goodness, rather than the sadness that seems to be pervasive.
