Skeptic Finds He Now Agrees Global Warming Is Real
WASHINGTON (AP) — A prominent physicist and skeptic of global warming spent two years trying to find out if mainstream climate scientists were wrong. In the end, he determined they were right: Temperatures really are rising rapidly.

The study of the world's surface temperatures by Richard Muller was partially bankrolled by a foundation connected to global warming deniers. He pursued long-held skeptic theories in analyzing the data. He was spurred to action because of "Climategate," a British scandal involving hacked emails of scientists.

Yet he found that the land is 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius) warmer than in the 1950s. Those numbers from Muller, who works at the University of California, Berkeley, and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, match those by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA.

He said he went even further back, studying readings from Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. His ultimate finding of a warming world, to be presented at a conference Monday, is no different from what mainstream climate scientists have been saying for decades.

2. He also says that everyone should have been
a skeptic two years ago, as if the confirmation of global warming has only been confirmed in the last two years. It's just that he only started looking into the actual scientific evidence two years ago. My response to his saying that global change is real is to ask to see what rock he's been living under.

It feels as if he wants to take sole credit for figuring this out, as if that knowledge and understanding hasn't been out there for about two decades now.

3. A lot longer than 2 decades, actually.
As I recall the data started in the 1950s.

5. Thank you.
I can recall learning in the early 1960's that we were coming out of an era of unusually mild and predictable weather, and that into the foreseeable future we'd be having more extremes of weather, more unpredictability. I would have read that in something like Time or Newsweek, as I was a high school student at the time and didn't have access to any kind of scientific journals.

6. 'huge mistake'
Scientist who claimed 'end of scepticism' on climate change under fire from colleague over 'huge mistake'

One of the authors of a scientific study billed as the ‘end of scepticism’ about climate change yesterday threatened to quit after she said the project leader underplayed the fact there has been no global warming for 13 years.

Professor Judith Curry was one of ten experts attempting to compile definitive temperature data going back more than 200 years.

But she claimed it had been ‘tarnished’ by the project’s director ‘overselling’ the results in favour of global warming.

Funded by a number of donors, including sceptics of climate change, the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project concluded global temperatures had risen by around 1c since the 1950s, in line with official estimates from Nasa and the Met Office.
