Dog Saves Owner, Dies in Fire (W/Update)

Grief: Scott Dunn lies on the grave of his dog Duncan in the back garden of his home after it was gutted by the fire that killed the pet

A heroic dog saved his owner from a Northeast Cobb house fire but died in the blaze on Joel Drive early today, WSB-TV reported.

The blaze destroyed the brick ranch house. The fire started around 3:30 a.m. at 607 Joel Dr., 11 Alive News reported.

Cobb County fire Lt. Mike Bell said flames were coming out of every window and shooting through the roof when the fire engines arrived, and firefighters were still putting out hotspots at 6 a.m.

The fire started in the center of the house, where the homeowner said he had a space heater running, WSB reported.

The only casualty was Duncan, the boxer who awoke his owner of four years while the fire raged.

Dog story unleashes outpouring of support for fire victim

Tuesday’s story about Scott Dunn, the Marietta man who was saved from a raging house fire by his faithful four-legged companion, Duncan, unleashed an outpouring of compassion from readers, who contacted ajc.com in droves offering assistance to Dunn, who lost all his possessions, including the boxer that he tearfully remembered as the “best dog in the world.”

Offers of help poured in from as far away as Washington state, with several writing to offer replacement puppies to Dunn.

“I breed boxer puppies, and I know that they are the perfect family dog, and more,” wrote a man from Iowa. “This story goes to show how much they care for the ones that take care of them. I would like to offer this fella a pup, free of charge, if and when he is ready for one.”

At least two other readers wrote saying they would like to purchase a new puppy for Dunn. One reader even offered his own 6-week-old puppy to Dunn.

He was never without one either. I toured his house once and the scratches from the dogs were still there by the back door to get out.

2. Tragic

I lost my boy to natural causes last year at 11 years old. Mine was a rescue from a tow truck garage. This sweet creature loved everyone and had no inclination toward "guarding" a garage so they beat him and broke his front leg.


The cops took him and gave him to us. We gave him 9 great years. He gave us enough love to last a lifetime.
