xpost: Texas Judge Beats Disabled Daughter on Video
Warning: The video is graphic and prolonged. Don't watch if you can't handle, or don't want to see, serious physical and emotional abuse.

The YouTube video is accompanied by a fairly detailed summary:

2004: Aransas County Court-At-Law Judge William Adams took a belt to his own teenage daughter as punishment for using the internet to acquire music and games that were unavailable for legal purchase at the time. She has had ataxic cerebral palsy from birth that led her to a passion for technology, which was strictly forbidden by her father's backwards views. The judge's wife was emotionally abused herself and was severely manipulated into assisting the beating and should not be blamed for any content in this video. The judge's wife has since left the marriage due to the abuse, which continues to this day, and has sincerely apologized and repented for her part and for allowing such a thing, long before this video was even revealed to exist. Judge William Adams is not fit to be anywhere near the law system if he can't even exercise fit judgement as a parent himself. Do not allow this man to ever be re-elected again. His "judgement" is a giant farce. Signed, Hillary Adams, his daughter.

Though the video was uploaded on October 27, it wasn't until today that it began to receive attention—thanks to the popular link-sharing site Reddit, where a poster identifying herself as Hillary Adams shared it (with the title "Family law judge beats own daughter for using the internet, please spread"), writing that she'd decided to post the video (which she'd been "holding onto... until the right time") after receiving "a barrage of harassment" from her father over the phone.

Posting to Reddit was the right move. The site, which has a strong protective streak, quickly sprung into action. Posters, encouraging others to call and write, provided links and phone numbers to news outlets, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, the State Commission on Judicial Conduct—and to the judge's place of work. As is not uncommon in situations like this, the official Aransas County website is down as of this post, likely thanks to heavy traffic from Reddit.

179. Saw earlier that he probably won't face prosecution over it.
In Texas, felony child abuse charges require evidence of physical injury. While the tape shows a beating, it doesn't show her bleeding or otherwise show any injury that can be prosecuted under the states felony statutes. He would have to be prosecuted under the states normal non-felony child abuse laws.

The statute of limitations for non-felony child abuse charges in Texas is 5 years. Even though the video just came to light, it was actually filmed in 2004. Unless they can figure out a way to indict him under a felony count (which has a 10 year statute of limitations), he can't be charged. The clock has run out.

At this point, it looks like the best route may simply be to get him thrown off the bench. Even if they can't prosecute him, this guy has no business sitting in judgement of others.

Just heard on the radio a statement from someone at the Texas State Commission on Judicial Conduct to the effect that “We won't confirm that we've received any complaints or are investigating any judge at this point in time.”

In other words "Don't worry, we State Officials will take care of it. Go back to sleep."

199. She is 23 years old now and no longer in the house
She filmed the incident seven years ago and just finally made it public a week ago because she was sick of his "harassment" and it was escalating. She apparently decided to post the video on YouTube following a particularly abusive telephone conversation with her revolting father. According to another article, her mother had left him at some point between that incident and now due to emotional abuse she suffered from him and has apologized to her daughter. Her mother also apparently suffered similar abuse from her own parents when young.

I'm not only sickened by his abuse but the fact that he is a FAMILY court judge and has made controversial (ie: disgusting) rulings concerning abused children. Ugh!

18. Yep. At the very least.
I don't know what the statute of limitations on child abuse in Texas is. You'd think that there wouldn't BE a statute of limitation on something like that, but sadly, there probably is.

And some of the comments on the video from psychos who think that this was JUST FINE make me want to beat THEM.

184. Unfortunately that's not correct.
Saw a discussion posted on this on another board earlier. The poster cited the relevant sections of Texas law. In Texas, the child abuse protection limits are:

10 years from the child's 18th birthday for sexual abuse.
10 years from the abuse date for felony nonsexual abuse.
5 years from the abuse date for non-felony, nonsexual child abuse.

I can dig back through my history and dig up the relevant legal sections if you want, but I'm sure you can probably Google it yourself even quicker.

200. unfortunately, proving the felony is nearly impossible
For it to rise to a felony charge the abuse has to produce injury of some sort... bleeding, bruising, etc. From the video it can't be determined that she was physically injured in such a way. Though common sense says she must have been injured given the brutality of the attack the fact remains that no such injury can be seen in the video.

The judge is already claiming that the video makes the incident look worse than it was (yeah, right!), so there's no doubt that he will claim there was no injury. And sadly, I have grave doubts that the young woman herself won't claim the same... she has already made some comments that she doesn't want people to say mean things about her father and what he did (and apparently did often) and has even said that she now regrets exposing the video. This poor young lady needs counseling, and I so hope she is getting it somehow.

27. If the wife had guts enough to leave the marriage, she should have had guts enough
to report the abuse. She can repent until she's blue in the face, but the fact remains that she assisted in the abuse and did nothing then or later to stop it. She's as complicit as he is, as far as I'm concerned.

178. Unless you've been in an abusive relationship yourself
please refrain from passing judgment; the daughter didn't judge her mother so harshly because SHE UNDERSTOOD that an abuser can be so terrifying that their victims believe that someone will be killed if they take action. And you know what? Sometimes that's exactly what happens.

195. You can consider me judgmental if you wish, and perhaps I am. I just know
that a woman who escapes an abusive relationship, but leaves her daughter with her abuser, knowing what kind of abuse she has suffered, gets no sympathy from me. How many times do you think someone is killed because no one takes any action in these situations?

...I purchased a copy of Walt Disney's movie "Song of the South" on ebay back in 2007 (since Disney refuses to release the movie for regular sale), and I've let my kids watch it. You gonna come and beat me now, you piece-of-shit? C'mon asshole, let's see you try it. Come on over to Georgia...we're bigger rednecks than you are. C'mon coward, come and meet your match. What's wrong? You can beat a helpless disabled girl, why don't you come try to do that to a man...just make sure you've paid your last life insurance premium before coming over. Then again, I doubt your daughter would want to give you a proper burial....she'd probably rather throw your dead ass off the South Groin Pier in Rockport Harbor and let the sharks feed off you.

she claims to have suffered, it is a parent's duty, DUTY, to protect their children from this kind of abuse. She could have reported this to the authorities anonymously, if nothing else. She failed her daughter and should share the blame and the punishment.

I have a different point of view that comes from a childhood of experience. I would really rather not discuss it, and request that you don't ask me too. I'll leave it with this.... the dynamics in these types of situations are never clear cut. The abuse we witnessed in that video......, I am sure was not suffered by only one person in that household. And it's not as easy as you think it is to do what you think should have been done by the mother.

of the abusive household, but apparently left her daughter there. Even if she was afraid of the husband while she was living with him, she could have reported the abuse to the daughter after she had removed herself from the household.

38. FWIW, I share your point of view here.
I had a lot of abuse in my past, and I recognized what the mother was doing. Deflecting. Trying to appease without turning the rage onto her. "Look...see, I yelled at her and hit her once. Now you don't have to hit her fifty times. See? I upheld your authority. Now you don't need to beat her anymore."

Oh yes. I saw it too.

170. You could not be more wrong.
And, you would benefit from reading the literature on relationship violence. I have done advocacy for survivors of relationship violence for better than 30 years. I can assure you that the abuser in such families wields incredible power. Since you don't know the specifics of this case, you tread on thin ice when you assert such a judgmental and hurtful blaming statement.

I didn't watch the video but if she left the house without her children (and without calling authorities) she needs some serious help. In my past have been involved in abusive situations so I'm not just passing judgment without understanding what it's like. Will leave it at that.

175. Well, now...
Consider situations where the abused partner successfully leaves the abuser: if the abuser has inordinate power (this guy is a JUDGE, for goodness' sake!), the abused partner is unlikely to have the necessary resources to gain custody of the children.

I advocated for a mother of three who HAD to escape her abuser or die. She fought a long and costly battle to gain custody of her children, only to lose even visitation. Why? Because her abusive husband had strong political and economic ties in their insular community. He pulled strings, and successfully deprived her of all her parental rights. At the time I met her, she had not seen or held her children in months.

If you want to express outrage, be outraged that our society STILL does not acknowledge that CHILDREN in abusive households are just as much victims of the abuse, even if they are NEVER physically abused by the abuser!

(Furthermore, it is WAY past time that abusers be held solely responsible for their behavior.)

and as I stated in my previous post I do not wish to discuss the previous abusive relationship I was in.

But I stand by my answer - she is married to a judge and thus has resources. She could've taken the girl to the hospital, called the police from there, etc ... Instead she participates in the abuse. Sorry, but that is too much for me to excuse.

I am STATING--after years of advocacy for survivors, after attaining a higher degree with an emphasis on the dynamics of relationship violence, after hearing countless stories of courage and survival--that ANY spouse of an abuser must develop survival strategies for every moment of every day. ANY spouse of an abuser struggles with a sense of normalcy, often having no frame of reference for what the rest of us consider 'normal.' ANY spouse of an abuser has little to no personal power, and rarely any economic power.

You say that this woman "is married to a judge and thus has resources." I say that you have NO IDEA what resources are available to HER, because her abusive partner may control every single penny of his income AND her income. I've done advocacy with amazing survivors who've used subterfuge and clever strategies to gather the cash they needed to escape their abusers--in one case, it took the survivor three years to amass enough money for bus tickets for herself and her children.

Frankly, I am concerned that you aver that you "do not wish to discuss the previous abusive relationship" that you survived, yet you feel justified in making evaluative statements about this particular survivor. I wonder if you might have experienced hurtful, judgmental statements from those to whom you looked for help in your time of need. If so, I encourage you to remember how inappropriate are blaming and shaming statements towards ANYONE who must find the courage and the strength to survive abuse at the hands of someone they should be able to trust, and toward whom they should feel no fear.

I suppose I should mention that I too am a survivor--of every abuse you can imagine, including relationship violence. Consequently, I possess more than mere "book larnin'" about this pervasive, pernicious, and incredibly difficult issue.

228. Thanks for your comments -
I will think them over, maybe do a little more reading myself. I got out of the relationship quickly after the abuse started. I keep thinking folks should be strong enough to pick up and leave as I did - but then again I had my own good job, no kids to worry about, and family/friends for support. That may make all the difference. Thanks again.

I watched it until the mother asked for the belt. That was enough to leave me very disturbed. Count me as one who thinks the mother is as guilty as the father. I don't buy her excuse that she was a victim too. She asked for the belt. I hope both of their lives are made miserable for a long time for this.

Because he should be in jail and never have the right to unsupervised visitation, nor should he ever be allowed access to the smaller child he ordered out of the room. So upsetting. And a judge no less.

"Christian Police Officer Speaks Out on Corporal Punishment

By Det. Robert R. Surgenor
Berea, Ohio Police Department
Dear Mr. Benedict

I am a Christian police officer in charge of our city’s Juvenile Crime Unit. For years, I have compiled statistics that indicate when parents eliminate corporal punishment from their discipline plan, the child grows up with an attitude of "no fear."

Even when the parent is diligent in other areas of discipline, such as taking away privileges and grounding, when that one element of discipline, spanking, is taken away, the parent usually experiences defiance problems throughout the teen years.

Since 1982 in my city, the incidents of Domestic Violence cases where children physically assault their parents has increased 700%. The national statistics show an overall increase of almost 400%. I am responsible for compiling all information on those offenses.

I conduct interviews with the parents and child, along with school officials and employers of the child. What I find startling, is that of all those kids arrested in my city for hitting their parents, only 1.9% received any type of corporal punishment as they were being raised. Less than 2% of these aggressive, angry children were spanked! The non-spanking "experts" contend that spanking a child makes them angry and aggressive. The exact opposite is true!

The non-spanking crowd are a close-knit group who are attempting to convince the public to stop spanking their children. Their attitude is one of arrogance. Their movement is humanistic. Their religion is atheistic.

There are prophesies that refer to children and the mindset of the younger generation in the last days. 2nd Timothy 3:1 states "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents......" Along with all of the other changes in attitude, is the predicted change in the attitude of children toward their parents.

I believe that the anti-spanking movement has, and will continue to have, a hand in the fulfillment of Biblical prophesy. Unbeknownst to the non-spanking advocate, they are helping to cause children to be "disobedient to parents,"

something that was predicted in 2nd Timothy in the year 66 AD. I believe that the elimination of corporal punishment is the major factor in the attitude of "no fear" that we are now experiencing in our youth.

Think about it. When you got grounded as a child, it was a real inconvenience, but you weren’t afraid of it. When you had the TV taken away it was real boring, but you weren’t afraid of it. What made you move fast was hearing the leather coming out of dad’s belt loops! That’s what really made you respect your dad’s authority!

I believe as Christians, we have a responsibility to educate parents as to their responsibility and authority. I have recently written a book called "No Fear," and hope to have it published in the near future. We are being inundated by numerous sources telling us we can’t spank our kids. Psychologists, the Department of Children’s Services and Public School Counselors are telling us we cannot discipline our children. Enough is enough!

The law protects a parent who wishes to spank their child, most parents just don’t know it! A parent must know the LIMIT of his or her power to avoid exceeding it, and the EXTENT of the power to exercise it fully. Once a parent knows to what extent they can go to control their child, they can move forward without fear of arrest or interference from the authorities. And once the child realizes that the parent is in total control, the will is broken, and compliance results.

The dedicated Christian, like those in Acts 17:11 "received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so," will see that God’s Word plainly advocates spanking in child rearing. In order for the Christian to effectively use the Bible as a reference to advocate corporal punishment, he must know exactly what the Bible says about spanking. That is why I believe your message is so important. I encourage you to keep up the good work.

Your message on the Internet was of great encouragement to me. May God bless you in your efforts. In His Name,

Det. Robert R. Surgenor
Berea, Ohio Police Department

My reaction to this wasn't mere anger--it was full-blown RAGE. I remember all too well what that kind of abuse is like, although for me, it was coming from my spouse instead of my father. But I witnessed one of my friends going through a situation almost exactly like this one with HER Dad. It's horrifying. I can't even imagine the scars these kids must have.

I bet you anything that this son of a bitch promotes himself as "pro-family", too.

45. I would also like to comment on the incredible courage of this young woman.
Edited on Wed Nov-02-11 09:17 AM by Lyric
It took an enormous amount of bravery to video-record this. Imagine what would have happened to her if he'd noticed the video camera pointed his way. Considering how violent this man is, he'd probably have beaten her nearly to death, if not outright killed her. It took an enormous amount of emotional strength to do this, too. What happens in that video is humiliating and damned hard to watch; it was infinitely worse to experience. Making and posting this video meant that she had to re-experience that abuse over and over again during the process. Many people would crumble at that thought, but she powered through it and gave child abuse a real face. More importantly, she proved to us that child abuse knows no socioeconomic boundaries. A presumably comfortable, successful middle-class white judge can be a child abuser just as easily as a poor parent living in a trailer park.

What a brave, strong girl. I hope she comes forward to the media. She deserves the chance to speak to a national audience about this. And I pray that she's found good, solid resources to help her cope.

 :loveya: Hillary Adams

97. I was thinking about Hillary as well -
hoping she has the emotional strength to get through the media attention. It may have given her some power back to make the tape, and maybe enough that she's managed to get some psychological help in the meantime.

I lived in a rural area growing up and saw a lot of this type of abuse - parents didn't hide it back then. It stays with you even if you are not the victim. Can't imagine what it's been like for her. Also appreciated your comment on social strata - I know that's the case with wife-beating as well. Just as likely in a well-off home as lower income.

When I was 12, I was staying the night with my friend S******. She had moved in with her Dad because her Mom's boyfriend had been making creepy, inappropriate comments to her and her mother refused to believe her. We were up past "bedtime", giggling in the bedroom, and her Dad came home from work and heard us. He proceeded (right in front of me) to drag S****** out of the bedroom by her hair, strip her to her underwear, and beat her for fifteen minutes with a wet leather belt. I started crying and wound up running back across the neighborhood to our trailer in the middle of the night, completely terrified of what I'd seen. I told my Mom and Dad, but they didn't seem to believe me that it was a awful as it really was, and they didn't do anything except forbid me from going over there whenever her Dad was home. S****** wound up moving out to go live with her Mom, and then wound up being raped by her Mom's boyfriend after all.

I'm still in touch with S****** today, but we've never spoken about that stuff. I don't even know what to say. I still blame myself a little; like I should have called the police myself. But I was only 12. I didn't know the police would listen to me, especially since S****** had begged me not to tell anyone.

I tell my son now that if he sees ANYTHING like that at one of HIS friends' homes, he needs to tell me ASAP and I absolutely promise him that I will believe him and get the authorities involved.

There is still nothing on CNN, NYT, IHT, MSNBC - I admit, I have not tried FAUX.

Earlier today there was a wikipedia page - but whatever it said had been replaced by a "gee, we don't really know about this. I mean, it was only his daughter as the source" and now it seems to have entirely disappeared.

William Adams admitted that he was shown in the video.

"It happened years ago ... I apologized," William Adams told KRIS-TV.

When asked if he thought the conduct in the video was excessive, the judge said, "It's not as bad as it looks on tape."

The video shows a man violently whipping a girl in the legs 17 times and growing increasingly irate, while she screams and refuses to turn over on a bed to be beaten.

"Lay down or I'll spank you in your (expletive) face," the man shouts. The girl wails and pleads for him to stop.

Without the internet and it's netizens I do believe that not only would MSM would have never covered it, but the local officials would never have investigated. However, as a Texan with long experience in Texas Justice, I am biased - perhaps such savagery would have touched Rockport's heart in any event. Wouldn't want to bet on that though.

There was nothing there earlier - the exposure is forcing them to take action.

Keep calling, emailing: Else it will likely go the way of most investigations of officials here in the Great State 'O Texas.

I cannot find any link on the Texas Courts Site { http://www.courts.state.tx.us/links.asp } which looks to be appropriate.

However here are some addresses Texas STATE PROSECUTING ATTORNEY:

68. What a sick bastard! "I'm gonna beat you into submission!"
And he is a Family Law Judge, is that correct?. He's an abusive control freak who should be prosecuted for his crimes.

Statement regarding what the Rockport police are doing about this:

The investigation started last night, when the video was brought to the department's attention, Police Chief Tim Jayroe told IBTimes. In the video, which was recorded in 2004 and posted to YoubTube last month, a man who is thought to be Adams repeatedly beats his teenaged daughter with a leather belt for "playing video games" and downloading music online.

Jayroe cannot confirm that the man in the video is Judge Adams, and noted that there has never been a complaint filed against Adams in the past.

The Rockport police will "try to contact folks identified in the video to determine authenticity," Jayroe said, adding that they "don’t have the personnel to assign full time."

Jayoe has contacted the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers to help with the investigation.

"We're taking appropriate actions; working with state agencies," the police chief said.

http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/242050/20111102/judge-william-adams.htm

I'm actually relieved to hear the investigation isn't going to be handled within the local jurisdiction. With the DPS and the Rangers working the investigation there's less chance this asshole will get off.

157. Here...
From 2010--

Corrupt Judge William Adams Aransas

Judge William Adams Aransas County Court at Law

Corrupt, Child Abuser, Liar, Conspirator

I was visiting County Court at Law in Aransas County on October 11, 2010, and I was horrified at what I saw. The case involved custody of a 6 year old child.

The mother presented medical records from Texas Mental Health and Retardation Services (MHMR) showing that the child care provider used by the father was homicidal, suicidal, psychotic and heavily drugged among other things. Judge William Adams presiding judge of the Court held that this evidence was “irrelevant.” I heard the lawyer for the mother say “You better hope this child is not hurt.” Incredibly, Judge William Adams just shrugged his shoulders.

The father, his lawyer, and the child care provider had all lied earlier claiming the child care provider was perfectly OK. Judge William Adams couldn’t care less about this lie designed to endanger the child. The hearing was obviously rigged and the truth would not interfere with the outcome that had been predetermined. Judge William Adams didn’t even conceal the corruption.

137. Thanks HJ!
I'm way past my childhood. I'm 50+ years old and I'm happily married to a spouse who makes me feel completely safe. Watching that tape was like a typical night at my house, the only difference being the language wasn't foul, and in my case the belt wasn't looped, but was cut up the middle lengthwise. To this day my abusive parent feels that such punishment was deserved.

Now I have to deal with mustering the strength to deal with aging parents in a caring, humane way. The one who was abusive is constantly looking for reassurance that they were a good parent and doesn't want to deal with the reality of what they did. And it's hard for me to give that reassurance...unfortunately the day that parent dies my main emotion will be relief and feeling that I've been freed from some sort of prison.

Who quotes a Christian Police Officer as saying
{
The dedicated Christian, like those in Acts 17:11 "received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so," will see that God’s Word plainly advocates spanking in child rearing. In order for the Christian to effectively use the Bible as a reference to advocate corporal punishment, he must know exactly what the Bible says about spanking
}

The most Christian and Godly punishment would to beat your child with a hardbound copy of scripture?

Odds that this judge is: Republican; Christian?

I'm shocked that anyone is shocked by it. This goes on all the time. This and much, much worse. She's "lucky" she got it on tape, and that she still has the mental and emotional strength to do something about it.

From the Corpus Christi station at the link: www.kristv.com

"Hallie Adams writes: "I am praying for my daughters and me and my family to heal in all ways from emotional and physical abuse, for the current and continuing abuse of my children and me that has been ongoing to end - starting now - for my daughters to both finally be able to go to counseling both individually and as a family group with their Dad's approval, encouragement, involvement and support, for him to finally make amends to all of us, talk openly with us, and take the first steps to letting our broken family heal."

133. The very sad thing about this, speaking as a physician ---
- now that my sense of justice served, and victim helped has been met - Is that I realize the people who are still most likely going to be the ones ending up really suffering from this are the daughters.

It is a common-place that children who are abused by their parents (usually it is the father) have a deep belief that they in some way deserved to be punished.

The abuser generally does not have, and will never have, either remorse or an understanding that what they did was truly horrible.

I fear that the daughter who was brave, and perhaps threatened, enough to release this horrific video (which I will not watch) is going to suffer remorse for hurting her father by exposing - literally to the world - his savage behavior. She will end up feeling that remorse which he should feel for hurting her, she will feel guilt he can never comprehend.

I do hope that she can be provided with appropriate counseling (if there can be any such) to deal with the feelings of guilt and betrayal which I expect she is going to feel. Feelings that her father will never share.

The State of Texas failed in its duty to protect this child from her parents, I hope (but do not trust) that Texas will not fail in its duty to help her to heal.

Gov Rick: Do you have anything to say on this matter? You could ensure that such duty is met. Though I doubt you have either the compassion, or the courage, to do so.

135. Gov. Rick probably thinks Judge Adams is well within his right
To discipline his children. Same fundie reasoning, etc.

Your post underscores the real sadness to all of this, being that the daughters will be the afflicted and the father will come out relatively untouched. I do think he will most likely be resigning soon, but even still, his life will not ever be impacted to the degree to which his abuse has impacted his children.

you do what you can to keep her safe & find out if she's getting counseling of some sort. A lot of resources in your area. She is going to need support as this is discussed in the press. It's not her fault and she did nothing to deserve this. What happens to her dad as a result is also not her fault. Please make sure she knows this.

it's actually pretty common in this state and other places as well. Lack of education in some cases - cycle of abuse and community norms (esp. the fundy Christians). I'm actually glad to see the outrage in this thread because so many think this is how to "discipline" children.

Let him pick on someone who might not have the disabilities of his daughter. Or just give me a belt and let us go at it. I grew up in a household where my dad beat mom so bad the cops were there all the time until she gave him the heave-ho. I was 10 at the time, and still remember the years cowering behind the couch with my little brother, and how helpless we felt. I don't handle this sort of thing well at all.

I hate my parents. My dad for being an asshole, my mother for allowing it and still justifying it to this day. My brother for growing up and doing the same to his own daughter...cause y'know he survived.

My family are all tea pot losers and live far away. Certainly this guy should not be a judge or involved in in the justice system. Poor girl!

My mom posted on face book about threatening my four year old niece with a wooden spoon which I thought was nuts!) If nothing else hopefully they'll get an education on better ways to discipline kids. It's easier for me to speak out since I'm on the other side of the country and can avoid their wrath.

167. The more I think about this case the more it breaks my heart & Lyric is right
I've been there, done that. I suffered beatings with a belt, and many times it felt like it was going to last forever. Like this girl, I had chutzpah and at times I would not give my abuser exactly what they wanted. Yes, the fighting and the beating often lasted for hours, yet I feel stronger as an adult that I stood up to a person who should've been protecting me.

As Lyric has expressed in her posts, there can be a whole lot of dysfunction going on in this family. One of my parents was abusive, the other was not. I'm not going to explain the non-abusive parent's behavior, only to say you just had to be there.

190. LQ, we all have to stand up together, don't we?
For those who weren't there, and didn't experience anything similar, it's hard for them to understand...why we love the non-abusive parent...and why we care for the abusive parent in their old age. My husband experienced corporal punishment as a child, but nothing like I did...he has tried to understand. This video was so hard for me to watch, yet it is the closest thing I can show him about the uncontrolled anger that a parent can show to a child, and the hours-long verbal and physical fights my parent would go off on with me because I didn't conform to their ideal of a normal child or teenager.

May the mother go to jail with the waste of skin for a father.

172. Update to this story - Judge's daughter: Hope beating video gets him help
Source: MSNBC

CORPUS CHRISTI — The 23-year-old daughter of a Texas family law judge says that she feels some regret about posting online video of her father violently beating her with a belt several years ago but that she hopes it forces him to get help.

The clip posted last week on YouTube shows Aransas County Court-at-Law Judge William Adams lashing his then-teenage daughter 17 times on the legs.

"I'm feeling some regret for publishing the video because to ruin my own father is heavy indeed. But I really want him to seek help," the person identifying herself as Hillary Adams tweeted on a Twitter account.

In another tweet moments later, the person said, "Please spread the word that my father needs professional help and not hatred. We can offer him the tools to be a better person."

Rockport, Texas, Police Chief Tim Jayroe said Wednesday that his department has launched an investigation after receiving numerous calls from concerned citizens who saw the video uploaded onto YouTube.

7 years ago, when she was 16 and living at home, this psychopath probably would have beaten her to death for posting this.

Now, after all this time, with no time to think of a more effective defense than the one he used when he was blindsided by KZTV this afternoon ("It looks worse than it is"), he's free to do what Angry Amish suggested upstream in this thread: Lock the door to his office and take his own life.

That's harsh, but ... you know a guy like this has already made more than his share of enemies before this video was made public. If he doesn't do it, I'm pretty sure someone will do it for him.

I don't mean to advocate that sort of thing. It's more like a social commentary on the recurring cyclical patterns of mankind's less merciful nature.

209. Party Affiliation Is Not relevant here.
My dad was from Arkansas, a lifetime Democrat, with much family in Texas, and he used The Belt on my brothers and I. The rules were clear, and I only got it a few times, but I've always thought it was the one very, very bad part of my childhood, and a major blight on an otherwise great job my folks did raising us. My sisters were never hit, and my Mom would freak the hell out if he tried it in her presence. Truthfully, I think my Mom's/sisters reactions made me feel much worse than the whipping itself. That, and I could see my Dad's unspoken regret at losing his cool for the next day or so. He was a very quiet, soft-spoken guy, who prided himself on staying cool, but occasionally his temper got the best of him. He thankfully quit drinking when he was about 45. and the violent episodes ceased entirely after that. From what my aunts told me when I was older, my Dad got it way worse than we ever did, and that was a common practice where they were from. Although I've always loathed physical violence, and, I think, held it against him unconsiously for a few years, we had a great relationship for the last 25 or so years before he passed on, and I harbor no animosity toward him now. He was a remarkable guy considering his background, and made the most of what could well have been a very tough existence. As for me, I've never laid a hand on my two kids. The Judge needs help, the kind he can only get while incarcerated. Lock his lunatic ass up.

Most people do not understand the psychology of an abused wife. Most would not have stepped in simply because they had been convinced they were wrong about everything. She did. That showed one hell of a lot of courage. And it ended the beating of her daughter without confrontation directed toward her.

Thanks, Judge, for dooming your daughter to a life of misery. Hope she gets help, and I hope it works better than mine did.

I'd like to meet this "judge" face-to-face. Bet he doesn't have the balls to pull that shit on somebody who'll hit back.

227. This is extremely difficult to watch....
Back in the 50's, my mom spanked me with a belt, but never anything like this.

So many people are clueless about what goes on in abusive households. This isn't even as bad as so much of the abuse that goes on every day, and people are ready to string the mother up as well. Others are oblivious as to why the video wasn't posted sooner.

Read about battered wife syndrome. Read about the kind of mental trauma that makes kids raised in these kinds of environments (and much, MUCH worse) extremely unlikely to tell anyone.

I get the righteous outrage, I do. But it's frustrating for me, as someone who grew up in a situation much worse than this, to read these ignorant comments and not get very frustrated.

I get that you care, it's good that people care. But if you want to understand this problem, PLEASE READ.

235. The quote from the judge, himself
In an interview with KZTV outside his Rockport, Texas, home Wednesday, Adams confirmed to a reporter that he was the man beating his daughter with a belt on the video.

"She's mad because I've ordered her to bring the car back, in a nutshell, but yeah, that's me. I lost my temper," Adams told the station. "Her mother was there, she wasn't hurt ... it was a long time ago ... I really don't want to get into this right now because as you can see my life's been made very difficult over this child."

If this quote is not the TYPICAL defensive posture of an abuser, I don't know what would be! He ORDERED her to bring the car back? What parent uses that word? Ordered?

The mother was there so that made it okay for him to beat his daughter?

And of course he doesn't want to get into it right now. He's been caught on video abusing his child!

The last portion is so typical, as well, blaming the child for making his life difficult.

What a sick, deviant man!

237. Dumbass Judge doesn't even know when to exercise his 5th Amdt Rights....
He should have just said, "I'm sorry, but I simply cannot comment at this time."

238. *******UPDATE*********
http://news.yahoo.com/dad-caught-video-beating-daughter-needs-help-070228201.html

PORTLAND, Texas (AP) — Hillary Adams says that until last week, only a couple of close friends knew about the savage beating she received seven years ago from her father, a Texas judge who handles child abuse cases.

Now the beating is on display to the world on YouTube thanks to a secret video she made, and her father, Aransas County Court-at-Law Judge William Adams, is the subject of a police investigation.

Hillary Adams, 23, says the outpouring of support and encouragement she's received since posting the 2004 video online last week is tempered by the sadness that it's her father lashing her 17 times with a belt and threatening to beat her "into submission." The 8-minute video had been watched nearly 2 million times by Thursday morning.

241. yet mummy dearest supports him and wants
him to heal.

She sure seemed like a willing participant. I wonder if she even realizes the damage she and her hubby caused to her daughter.
