Great Dane who grabbed baby in Monrovia to be euthanized
Posted: 12/15/2010 02:40:24 PM PST

MONROVIA - The owners of a Great Dane who grabbed a 6-month-old girl from her mother's arms and ran about 200 feet before dropping her have decided to have the dog euthanized.

The child suffered broken bones, a punctured lung and liver and multiple bite wounds following the incident Monday. She is recovering at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

The dog, a 170-pound male named Zack, is being quarantined at the Inland Valley Humane Society, said Monrovia police Lt. Michael Lee. The dog had no history of aggressive behavior.

The child's mother is friends with the dog's owner and was standing at the front door talking when the dog suddenly snatched the child and ran down the street.

1. How sad. I'm sorry the baby was injured, but also don't think nonagressive dogs
should die for their mistakes.

2. it wasn't the dog's mistake
It was the owner's and the mother's. The owner for not restraining their dog, and the mother for bringing a baby so near an unrestrained large dog. The dog was just being a dog.

6. Wonder if he is a younger dog. Some of the stuffed toys my dogs have are almost as large as a baby.
I think he was probably playing keep away.

4. I wonder if this dog had a toy doll or
stuffed toy that he thought the baby was? It sounds like playful behavior, not aggressive...

5. I've known a truly sweet Great Dane, this makes me sad. It sounds like the big guy
was just grabbing what he thought was a toy or some small prey. But I can understand the decision to put him down.
