Take a Look Inside Louisville's Crumbling Infrastructure

http://www.wlky.com/news/29651458/detail.html

WLKY Investigates: Cracks In The Water System

-snip video-

After a crack closed the Sherman Minton Bridge, WLKY investigative reporter Duane Pohlman began an investigation into all Louisville's infrastructure.

-snip-

In the end, WLKY uncovered a troubling picture of needed repairs, replacements and rebuilding with a price tag estimated in the billions of dollars.

Part 1: Louisville’s Drinking Water: Cracking Water Mains

-long snip-

After spending $150 million to replace service lines, many of them made out of lead, Louisville Water Company is setting aside $100 million more to deal with the aging water mains.

-snip-

The Sewer Walk

-snip-

Under the heart of Louisville there is a 12-foot-high tunnel called the Broadway Sewer.
Construction on the massive sewer began when Ulysses S. Grant occupied the White House.

1. Multiply Louisville 1,000 times over
and you get an idea of what cities all over the nation are facing - not just the metro areas either. At some point, the public will have to face the problem of our crumbling infrastructure, and that requires raising the revenue to do it. The rich had better fucking well recognize!

3. On that subject...
isn't the matter of our crumbling infrastructure technically a 'national security' issue? It beats the hell out of paying for huge standing armies, maintaining high-value war machinery & financing endless rounds of defense contracts for obsolete/unnecessary weapons programs.

4. Hopefully the bond markets will come back
As much of this infrastructure (water, sewer, etc.) are paid for through the issuance of tax-free municipal bonds. Rich or poor, it's hard to get taxpayers to shell out the dough for mundane and boring projects like sewer line maintenance, as opposed to "sexy" projects like new overpasses, modern airports, high-tech rail, etc.

5. Yep. Here in Minnesota the biggest concern right now is building a new stadium for the Vikings.
We already had the Minneapolis bridge collapse and there are so many others that need immediate attention.

It's outrageous that they're even considering pay for any of it. They claim it creates jobs. Never mind that they're the $10 an hour type.

Maintaining our infrastucture would create many good jobs, plus the safety of people should be top priority.
