So far we have one.

The ILWU at the Oakland port.

Please list the others as you get the information.

22. The Alameda Labor Council and California Labor Federation have not called a strike.
Edited on Wed Nov-02-11 01:05 PM by Better Believe It
They are encouraging their affiliated unions to participate in 'noontime worksite actions and joining the 5 p.m. PDT mobilization at Oakland City hall, the labor council and its affiliates will hold a “cookout” to feed everyone taking part."

That is a very significant and positive development but it is not a General Strike and there has been no call for a General Strike today by the major labor federations or their affiliates in the Bay Area.

Here's a good way to determine if a General Strike is actually taking place.

1. Can you shop today at supermarkets or at shopping centers?

2. Can you travel via public transportation or taxi cabs?

3. Are railroads running and are truck drivers trucking?

4. Is downtown shut down.?

Please. Let's not throw around the term "General Strike" if such a strike has not been called by workers organizations and if such a strike is not actually happening.

We'd all love to see a General Strike even if it is not a magic bullet but we can't simply wish one into existence by claiming one is taking place when it isn't!

So let's applaud and support the important positive actions that are now being organized by the labor movement without exaggerating what is is they are doing or just make shit up because it sounds very cool or really radical.

Objectivity and honesty are important virtues in the movement. Let's just stick with the facts. The facts are more than good enough!

Read what labor is doing at:

41. I don't understand that you have a new definition of what a General Strike is.

I always thought a General Strike was a general strike by workers called by those organizations.

But, I didn't know that's an "ancient days" idea and that your new and modern "General Strike" simply means that some group that isn't part of organized labor has called for such a strike thereby making it so even if people don't respond to the call.

Sorry for the error on my part and thanks for the info.

Do you also have a new and more modern definition of a "mass demonstration" .... which now means any action involving five to ten people?

42. Sorry but this is already having an effect
RT @KQEDnews: From KQED's Peter Shuler: City has advised banks to lock doors and only let in customers one by one... #OccupyOakland #GeneralStrike

In reality no general strike goes off 100%. In theory all should shut down. In reality that has never happened.

This is already quite big.

One of the objectives was to affect the flow of capital...read that post on twitter.

It was to affect the flow of goods...port is closed, no goods.

I know history...I'd say they have been pretty successful.

57. The flow of goods to supermarkets and store is uninterrupted.

The railroad and trucking transporatation industries are running.

The big supermarket and department store distribution centers are running.

Sorry but I just hate to see the abuse, misuse and misunderstanding of political terms like "general strike", "fascism" and "fascists" which renders them almost meaningless.

Words have meanings.

Sorry if I seem hard on this but overblown and exaggerated rhetoric is such of waste of time and lessons our credibility.

We have to understand what is really happening, the truth, good and bad, in order to make intelligent decisions.

35. Technically, it's illegal for unions to call for supporting strikes.
It's called a secondary strike, and they're illegal according to Taft-Hartley.

So the union's official organization will simply say they stand in solidarity with the people striking without calling for their own members to strike.

However, union members on their own may decide to go wildcat, and that I highly encourage.

44. You have a "secondary strike" confused with a "secondary boycott" which is illegal.
Edited on Wed Nov-02-11 02:30 PM by Better Believe It
Most labor contracts do not prohibit strikes that are not related to a dispute or other issue regarding an employer labor union contract. Rarely are "political strikes" even mentioned in collective bargaining agreements.

And astute union officials know how to organize work "safety" slow-down, sick-outs, mass union membership meetings during working hours and other effective tactics to get around contract and/or government restrictions regarding the right to strike.

If and when the labor movement decides to organize a general political strike and other mass actions it shall be done .... period.

We won't allow undemocratic laws and governments stand in our way.

day as they see fit. Unions are still respecting the laws that shackle their power; when they stop, then shit will get real.

24. That's what we need all over! Mass marches, rallies and other forms of protest.

That's a huge part of building an independent mass movement.

And I hope that tomorrow we don't hear whining from a few people who say they are "tired of marching" because we didn't "win" power on Wednesday and that big business/Wall Street still control things.

19. Personal view
The last time a general strike went off was sixty six years ago. People are relearning all these skills. But even if this is not 100%, they never are, this is huge. This is historic. Mark your calendars. This also points to a massive change in the zeitgeist.

Oh and watching, if I can call them nooz, msnbc. I have yet to hear them mention it. There could not be a starker example of corporate vs people's news. The twitter is our modern version of workers papers. I expect those to come under attack soon.
