Designed to help educators create a safe space for LGBT youth in schools, the NEW Safe Space Kit features the 42-page Guide to Being an Ally to LGBT Students. This guide provides concrete strategies for supporting LGBT students, educating about anti-LGBT bias and advocating for changes in your school. You can either print your own off or order one for $15 which you can direct to be sent to a school.

1. When I get paid I'm going to send one to my old high school

They're actually pretty understanding over there, but a little more push in that direction can't hurt.

2. My kids' schools have these kits, or a kit similar to it. The principal's office at the

elementary school has a sticker with a big triangle on it saying "safe space."

I can't say that for my school, sadly.

4. The schools are in a small town, where everybody knows everybody, and we moved here several years

ago. I have to say I was really pleased when I saw that sticker. My son is 12 and there are a couple kids who are clearly gay in his class level, and so far there haven't been any issues -- I know things go downhill in the teen years, so I hope there's enough support for them. I talk with my kids about bullying all the time -- especially how you're not off the hook just because you're not a bully; you have to stop other bullies when you see them trying to hurt people. That's what courage is.
