General Assembly Question (Just Me, But...) Should Oakland Become The The Winter Camp For #OWS ???
Edited on Wed Nov-02-11 10:23 PM by WillyT
Not dissing anybody else's occupy, but it seems that Oakland has been sufficiently rendered perfect for the wintering of Occupy.

Onedit: I should have added... as a headquarters.

1. What's the hand signal for "HELL YEAH!!!1!!1!!"
:bounce:

Fair warning: The weather here in the Bay Area isn't quite like SoCal. No snow (in the past 30 years or so), but winters tend to feature miserable chilly, windy rain, and last year's was pretty bad.

2. No
The center of attention has to shift to Washington DC. That's the heart of the problem.

7. I vote washington dc, not here.
Although, there ought to be some presence in front of the Federal Reserve, imo. I don't believe it's necessary to camp out per se, especially overnight and especially during the winter. I think it's perfectly sensable take a break, with frequent presence and marches. But i do hope this hasn't been co-opted by the politicians and parties. I read OWNYC has been co-opted by party functionaries, that the decision making processes for GA has been transformed in a nearly sleight of hand fashion, so that's it's being run vis a vis Spokes Council's. When I read that my heart sank. It didn't take long to turn something organic and remarkable into a co-opted political operation. booo.

16. Some info on OWS/NYC
The Spokes Council is open to anyone, just like the GA. It's being used to handle operational issues (e.g. kitchen, medical, sanitation, etc.). Also, the GA retains the authority to dissolve the Spokes Council anytime. I have seen no evidence of co-optation. That's not to say that there aren't things that merit criticism, nor that various individuals aren't disgruntled. But I don't think there's real reason for dismay at this point.

20. DC is where the laws that protect corporations and foster corruption are made.
I concur with your POV. Ya gotta go to the source.

Smaller outlier efforts should start to target the offices of legislators in their home states as well.

They need to tighten up the message--they've got the attention.

I think it's a good idea.

8. Why not Justin Herman Plaza in San Francisco?
Isn't Occupy San Francisco still there? Its adjacent to the Financial Center. Much better than Oakland.

15. As is Kansas City and Minneapolis and Atlanta and Chicago and Dallas
and etc, etc. There are 12 Federal Reserve districts in the US. The center of power is in DC, not California. Sorry, you're just not that important in this movement.

19. LOL. Um, tonight the center of "power" was in Oaktown
not in that pit of corruption inside the beltway. Sorry, they've made themselves irrelevant.

5. But That's Kind Of My Point...
Mayor Quan is so afraid of a repeat of last week... and the police are so confused by the political turn of events...

That Occupy Oakland might just get us through the winter unacosted... and allow #OWS come back into full bloom in the Spring.

12. Oakland seems dangerous as hell to me right now
because the leadership is not in good control. I was worried about people getting hurt today.

13. Yeah... But You Notice The Mayor Going 180...
And the police department going NUTS...

A true, if not enlightened, test of Democracy, No ???

(And don't get me wrong... I'm not sure who's gonna win this one either.)

BUT... whatever happens... the rest of us will know what's what.

18. Yep.
Occupy Oakland is more organized than the City of Oakland. I have more followers on Twitter (and not that many, really) than the spokeswoman for the city!

14. I agree with EFerrari, Quan is frightened enough to do something stoopid and I worry about tonight.
She doesn't understand that this is a peaceful movement.

But Los Angeles...the police and worse, the sheriffs...I don't even want to imagine it. Villaingrosa hasn't yet made a move, but if he fucks up, it could be bad. In terms of police-on-protester violence.

What we have here (with the "authorities") is a failure to communicate. They are failing to see this in terms of anything other than fight/flight reptilian response. Surprahs surprahs surprahs...

Great idea, WillyT!

11. Thank You...
I will be greatly admiring our new found Valley Forgers In The NY Winter of 2011/2012...

But... as Bloomberg keeps fucking with it, we have an Oakland mayor rendered "supportive"

If you know what I mean.

17. I'd like to see all regions represented continually.
Permanent camps throughout the country. I do hope we hold it together at Zuccotti, though - Wall Street carries great symbolic weight. That said, the movement could survive without that encampment.

21. No.
Oakland is great but occupy needs to HQ in DC
I think all the occupies should go on holiday this winter except for day protests at the local offices of the elected creeps
Volunteers can sign up from all over the country to replenish Washington throughout winter. And winter provisions can be consolidated
Best option IMHO

22. It will be a self-annointing location or locations.
No doubt it could be in any one of the coastal areas of our country that does not have severe cold winters. Any of the major cities on the West Coast, LA, SF, Portland, Seattle, Oakland.

It will evolve just as the rest of this phenomena has.

How about march across the continent, starting from Oakland and marching to Wall Street?
