A friend posted this elsewhere - Computer errors hoax |
|
This is for real...today got a call on my work phone
Caller: Excuse me sir we have had a report that your computer has some errors
Me: Oh really?
Caller: Yes sir the report is from your ISP that errors are occurring on your IP address
Me: OK are you sure you got the right IP address?
Caller: Yes sir!
Me: What is my IP address?
Caller: Let me check my database...{pause} Your IP is 192.167.34.19 sir
Me: Oh is it really?
Caller: yes sir!
Me: Cool...by the way how do you manage to tie up the IP with this phone number...
Caller:{in a smug tone} aah you see sir we can check these information....
Me: {in a not so smug tone} Oh can you? Then how comes you didnt know you just called .......
Caller: Let me check my database sir......
and he hung up pretty fast...we are still pissing ourselves here...
These guys are now using trolling methods to BS peep into giving credit cards number to clean up your computer with its errors...beware!

8. Not true. Just 192.168.xxx.xxx |
|
Well, and 172.16.xxx.xxx through 172.31.xxx.xxx and of course 10.xxx.xxx.xxx.
Still, the router should at least provide NAT so an individual's assigned IP address wouldn't be just "random knowledge".

192.168.x.x is an unroutable class c block of ip addresses. 192.x.x.x can be a perfectly valid public ip address. there is also 10.x.x.x (class a) and 172.16.x.x (class b somehow..)

I would lead him on for a while then say I was with the FBI or some other law enforcement agency and we were investigating a murder connected with his phone number...

4. I've gotten several of those phone calls. |
|
From someone with a very obvious Indian accent who gave a very obviously false English name like 'Jack' or 'Michael', claiming that they were 'Microsoft partner' and that they had been contacted by my ISP about 'errors with your PC'. My response to that was 'I don't have Windows! I have Linux!' To which there was a pause on the other end, and 'Lee-nooks? What...' So I just said 'well, you're obviously not much of a computer technician if you've no idea what Linux is, eh?' and hung up.

12. Okay, this means war. How many fuckin' computers you got networked right now? |
|
Note: do not include those that are NOT currently on the network. I've got at least 7 machines at any given time, upwards of 13, and three wireless printers. If I fire up all the legacy boxes I'm probably looking at 25 or so.
I think I can live with a class C network.

it's hard to pinpoint. Probably when I was elated to get a sound card/cd-rom kit for my x386. Though it could have been when I played "Secret of the Silver Blades" on a Commodore 64. It had 16 colors.

19. Hmm. Similar lines then. I pre-date the Apple II, still have my C=64 and Amiga 500. |
|
I remember getting one of the first IBM PCs in the area and man was it a piece of shit next to an Apple II. Commodore ruled at the time with Atari ST pushing a close second in the early 80's. The Mac was both behind and too fucking expensive.

The C64 was pretty awesome for it's time. Mac is still too expensive.
I may have discovered I was a geek when I got a 2400 baud modem and that was an upgrade.

25. Okay, so you're younger then. My first modem was a Bell 212A 120b acoustic coupler. |
|
Edited on Thu Nov-03-11 10:14 AM by HopeHoops
I'll be damned if you can FIND a phone that would fit an acoustic coupler these days.
I've got at least 3 Timex Sinclair's, started with an HP calculator with about 500 instructions and ten registers (yes, in a calculator). My wife's VIC20 still works, as do all of my Commodore machines. Most of the PCs have been upgraded or cannibalized. I've still got about 20 shells in the basement (waiting for me to take them to the scrap metal place for a few bucks), and I've got at least 20 CRTs I just can't seem to part with. My main machine has both a 27" and a 19" flat screen hanging off of it, 3TB internal, 6TB external, and is an i7 X 980 6 core running at 3.33GHz with 24GB of memory. I remember paying $300 to upgrade a 386 from 4MB to 8MB. Things change.

But I did catch up. My main is a 28" monitor, I have two GTX 460s in SLI, an i5 overclocked to 4.5Ghz, two internal RAID 0 arrays, and an external RAID array at 3 TB for backup. An 850W PSU powers it all. My sound card is a heavenly Oxygen 8788 CM chipset.
You've probably guessed by now that I like to game :). That's the entire reason I diverted from being a Chemistry major to loving computers.

It's all on air cooling. I have a Hyper 212 with a push-pull configuration of twin 120mm fans for the CPU alone, and then a push pull configuration of a bottom 120mm and top 120mm fan. I also have a front 120mm fan and a 120mm exhaust fan. Not as loud as you might think. They are all Scythe fans, so they are pretty quiet.
I also have a Z68 MB, and so I just got an SSD drive to enable caching, since I'm already running RAID.
I LOVE my new system.

My first computer was an Altair 8800. Five minutes of flipping front panel switches so that it would read the paper tape reader that would let you talk to it in English on the screen.
