House Dems introduce legislation to extend unemployment insurance through 2012

Democrats on the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee today introduced legislation to extend federal unemployment insurance programs through 2012.

The measure was introduced by Ways and Means ranking member, Michigan U.S. Rep Sander Levin, as well as U.S. Rep Lloyd Doggett of Texas, who is the ranking member on the human resources subcommittee.

“Never before has Congress allowed emergency unemployment benefits to expire with such a large percentage of Americans looking for work and we must not let that happen now,” said Levin, in a statement.

The bill would prevent 2 million unemployed from losing their benefits by February and another 4 million from losing them during the rest of 2012.
