'Occupy Supply' And Demand: FireDogLake Organizes To Keep Occupiers Warm Through Winter

First Posted: 11/3/11 04:41 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- As temperatures drop and snow begins to fall, thousands of Occupy protesters are beginning to fear the approaching winter while many of their supporters worry the occupations will thin out.

In an effort to combat both dwindling temperatures and participation, collaborative news blog FireDogLake has launched Occupy Supply, an initiative to provide the protests nationwide with enough supplies to survive the winter.

Occupy Supply began accepting contributions through its website on Oct. 21, but the unexpectedly large amount donated -- $50,000 in just a few hours -- encouraged Hamsher to slow promotion until Thursday so that she could figure out the best way to disburse the growing funds.

- snip -

"The saddest part of all of this was looking up union suppliers, and half of the (websites) were dead. All these companies have gone under," she said. "That's why people are out there on Occupy Wall Street because all of these jobs are gone."

2. Not all "people". The teanutters love NorquistDogLake.
If Ms. Hamsher can deliver OWS to the Koch Brothers, or some of her other Repuke clients, like Dick Armey delivered the Tea Party, what a powerful movement that would be. :puke:

7. The funding for items which may help people survive hypothermia
and possibly not lose their extremities is coming from supporters of Occupy Wall Street. If you have evidence otherwise, feel free to post it somewhere on the Internet.

35. I LOVE those little packs! I always have some in the van - I work outside
in New England- and often hand 'em out to panhandlers at intersections if I'm out of cash (happens a lot!)

All natural, disposable and last for about 8 hours of 'loverly' heat!

Yup, big fan.

41. I don't think many people know
about them...people like you who work outside and hunters, but that seems to be it. I hope OWS uses them this winter.

I have Reynauds Syndrome (circulation problem) and I have to keep my toes warm or they go numb and then hurt when they 'thaw.' I dont' know what I do without them. I wear them inside the house w/ warm socks and boots made in Canada...the warmest boots I've ever had!!!

That's a great idea about handing them out to homeless and panhandlers. Thanks.

9. LET THE DENOUNCING BEGIN! Let's start with Bob Fertick of Democrats.com
He also signed a letter with Norquist.

(I do expect crickets as a response because not one person has ever even tried to come up with a reason to defend Fertik while damning Hamsher.)

And also..

Healthcare-NOW!, Katie Robbins, National Organizer
Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), Tim Carpenter, Director
Democracy for America - Tucson Chapter, Richard Kaiser, Co-chair

And these people, as well...

10. I hate grifters. I respect Sarah Palin more than Hamsher. They're both in the same game, but...
Hamsher's figured out a way to play both ends against the middle, and it all adds up to $$$$$$. I'll bet the kids who'll be freezing their patooties off in the cold, have no idea of the many pies Ms. Hamsher-Norquist has her fingers in. With a movement like OWS, it's not hard to see how she'd be a major asset to her Republican clientele. :hi:

11. As expected. A non-answer to the Fertik/Norquist union.
No waving back at you. I have zero affinity with anyone who prefers to deal in truthiness*.

*Truthiness is a "truth" that a person claims to know intuitively "from the gut" or that it "feels right" without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or facts.

12. When you can disclose Ms. Hamsher-Norquist's client list, we'll have something to talk about.
If you can get Mr. Fertik's list, that would be a plus too. If he takes money to help Republicans defeat Democrats, then he's every bit the piece of s**t that Ms.H/N is. :hi:

Tarheel Dem wants to hate Hamsher? Fine. But, his unsubstantiated claims shouldn't go unchallenged. Luminous was doing a fine job of calling him out on his "truthiness." I fairly enjoyed it.

I have engaged this commenter many times, usually met by insults and attacks. There might even be a few examples in this thread. My comment was simply to state the obvious. The goal is to distract from the actual topic. Keeping the focus on the topic, undermines those efforts. It's a tactic, and the fact we are not talking about the actual topic right now, demonstrates how it works.

So, back to the topic. I am glad they are helping this movement, they have been up front for a long time on all that is wrong with both parties in this country, because of the money in politics, especially during the disastrous Health Care debate.

See my comment below this. This thread was being derailed, as any thread about FDL has been, regardless of the topic. Now people have had a chance to make their own decisions about this story. So the efforts failed because people are familiar with them now. :-)

provides no facts but is all about ad homs and snark and opinion? Seems that was done here and the outcome is clear for anyone without an agenda to see.

Edited on Fri Nov-04-11 12:16 AM by sabrina 1
if it were not for your thoughtful, supportive comments!

Oh and thanks to FDL for their great coverage and live-blogging of this movement from day one.

One thing about Hamsher, she gets things done, she doesn't sit around on the internet whining about silly, petty garbage.

Never was a fan of hers, but all the negativity and hypocrisy over her signing of a petition (actually it wasn't about that, it was about her revealing what Rahm the Third Way/DLC/New Democrat had to say to 'liberal orgs' about the base who got them elected, and about her standing up against the cave-in to the Health Insurance Ind. on the disastrous so-called HC bill. So, seeing that hypocrisy re her signing of a petition with Norquist, but not a word about Obama's Cat Food Commission filled with rightwing anti-SS members who invited Norquist to 'advise' them, I decided she has to have something going for her considering who was out to get her. You can judge a person as much by their enemies as their friends.

Hope that clears things up for you. And I look forward to your response to this comment, and the usual impotent attempts to insult rather than address actual content, they always make me laugh.

AND they help to kick threads like this! :hi:

:kick: for FDL!

The ones who only know identity politics.

On theory and policy they haven't a clue, but when it comes to personalities, they are the most voracious consumers.

George Soros : Tea Baggers : : Jane Hamsher : Obama's most ardent supporters.

I will also donate to FDL in T_D's honor. Thanks for the inspiration, T_D. And thanks to FDL for supporting OWS, which is what this thread was supposed to be about.

And, to find a point of agreement with T_D (not an easy thing for me to do), if anyone doesn't like FDL there are plenty other ways to get goods and funds to OWS. The OWS movement has given me a glimmer of hope for our future for the first time in a long while. Occupy!

Love Firedoglake
Edited on Fri Nov-04-11 09:42 PM by pmorlan1
I was the contact person for the Occupy Supply person who came to Louisville, KY. His name is Kevin Gosztola and he writes for Firedoglake on the Dissenter blog. He spent the afternoon talking with the Occupy Louisville folks and then I helped him pick up (2) 6-person tents that Occupy Supply generously paid for. I also kicked in a mummy sleeping bag and bought 4 large pizzas for the Occupiers (2 Papa John employees kicked in another large pizza for the cause). It was a great afternoon and we were glad to have Kevin and Occupy Supply visit us in Louisville.

I've been a fan of Firedoglake for a long time. You don't get the corporate viewpoint on Firedoglake so maybe that's why some just don't like them. They are most certainly not cheerleaders for the status quo.
