Suburban poverty on the rise in Northeast Ohio
Posted: 8:05 PM

CLEVELAND - Northeast Ohio suburbs being hit hard by increasing poverty.

A new study by the Brookings Institution found that 13 Northeast Ohio suburban areas had poverty rates over 40 percent.

And the families behind those numbers are showing up asking for help for the first time ever in record numbers at area suburban food pantries.

There’s now a shortage of donated beds, stoves and food at the Church Street Ministries in Berea.

Church Street’s Dave Worsencroft said families requesting help in the suburbs doubled in just the last year. People are losing jobs, losing houses, or having work hours cut to part time at a disturbing pace.

And yet, the jobs bill failed. :(

1. OMG - those were great area's 10-15 years ago. I am in shock - used to live in Berea
"The new population that is asking us for help are coming from Olmsted Falls, Berea, Brookpark and Parma." Worsencroft said.

Olmstead Falls? Wow, that used to be upper middle class.
