A police officer who beats, maces, or attempts to murder a protester with a tear gas canister... |
|
is a bad apple, isolated incident, nothing to be done about it.
A soldier who demonstrates no regard for human life in conducting his mission or who deliberately murders or tortures innocents... bad apple. Nothing to see here.
One banker in his 20s gets prosecuted for the same kind of fraud everyone in the banking system is involved in... problem solved. See? Justice.
A few guys at some Tea Party rallies (out of a couple dozen attendees, tops) say racist things or call for violence... what can you do? Their righteous anger overtook them, that's all. And it's not like their movement has a leader, so it doesn't reflect on anyone else.

A small group of Muslims, most of them halfway across the world, believe in using violence to carry out their objectives... so we should be afraid of Muslims, suspicious of Muslims, lead congressional hearings on the internal Islamist threat, and piss our pants about the creeping menace of Sharia Law!
A person or two at an Occupy protest say the wrong thing or (allegedly, haven't seen much evidence of this) make a little mess... obviously this reflects on their entire movement! Their whole movement is illegitimate because of this! This public menace should be put down by any means necessary!

2. Last night I had to crack up because a reporter I like |
|
went out of his way to determine that the police were only there to deal with rioters but said that violence stained the whole day for OWS.

Two-dimensional thinking is the ONLY way to go. Or two ways, I should say.
No room for nuance at all. What is context, but a fancy word that makes people's heads hurt?
What is a sense of measure? By whose measure? Everything is relative, so nothing can truly be measured; therefore, the distinctions between poor and wealthy are just a temporary illusion.
There's nothing to see here. Just Adam Smith's Huge Radioactive Invisible Hand, which will magically rebalance the world markets again, very soon... as soon as it's finished masturbating, that is.
Everyone is totally equal anyway, once we're all dead.
The Law must be simple, for simple folks. The Law, and the Uudgement of those who Oversee it. This is how they keep the peace on Monkey Island.
