Cat with dumbbell attached to neck found dead in Redwood City lagoon

Animal control investigators are looking for whoever zip-tied a 5-pound dumbbell to a cat's neck and tossed it into a lagoon behind some office buildings.

The dead black and white adult male cat was discovered Wednesday at 1 and 3 Lagoon Drive by sewer workers, who then turned over the animal's body to the Peninsula Humane Society, said PHS spokesman Scott Delucchi. Investigators believe it was alive when it was thrown into the water....

Because it appears the cat was intentionally killed, those person or people involved could face animal cruelty charges, Delucchi said. The agency sees one or two cases cruelty per year that result in prosecution.

It appears the cat had been in the water for a couple days and was a pet. While it didn't have a collar or microchip, its front paws had been de-clawed, Delucchi said. The animal didn't have any other immediately apparent injuries.

Actually, I think the dumbbell is still at large. :grr: :banghead: :argh: :nuke:

1. Dumbbell is incorrect. It is a psychopath that is on the loose. (nt)

3. What is it with drowning cats? I was watching (of all things) Darby O'Gill and the Little...
...People from Disney and there's a scene in there where, I shit you not, Darby O'Gill gets pissed off at the King of the Leprechauns and is like "If you don't stop messin' with me, I'll throw you in the river like a sack of kittens!" Just to make it clear that I didn't mishear, he's already captured the King in a burlap sack.

I was like- what the fuck?!

Great movie, BTW.

7. From what I've heard...
It used to be a common method of dealing with unwanted kittens in the country. People would allow feral cats to hang around their farms to deal with pests, but would drown the 'excess' if they thought there was too many.

12. Someone exacting revenge would be my guess on motivation.
It wouldn't be the first time that's happened. That said, one has to have a pretty twisted brain to throw a cat into water with a weight tied to it.
