January 15:

A Santa Monica High School student attempted to commit suicide near the campus of the school Friday, according to a district memorandum that has been obtained by Santa Monica Patch.

According to the memo, the incident occurred around 5 p.m. at the Sheraton Delfina hotel across the street from campus. The student attempted suicide by jumping off an upper floor of the hotel. After the attempt, the student survived and was transported to the UCLA Medical Center, according to the memo. The student's parents are with the student at the hospital.

A person who works for the SMMUSD but requested not to be named told Santa Monica Patch that the student, a freshman, kicked out a window on the eighth floor of the hotel. The individual also said police cordoned off the area near the school Friday after the incident.

(Updated at 2:23 p.m.): An individual who works for the SMMUSD and requested not to be named told Santa Monica Patch on Saturday afternoon that the student who attempted suicide has died.

1. Four kids in the same school?
Oh my God - I remember what it was like when one of our own students in HS died of natural causes. She was a nice person and a good sport, too. Member of the cheerleading squad. The whole school mourned.

5. The president of our senior class died the day we graduated
He found out at Christmas that he had bone cancer.

It was 40 years ago and I can still remember how heartbreaking it was.

8. It also burned me on organized religion
He was a Christian Scientist. He also played football and was injured that fall in a game. But he didn't go to the doctor. We found out after he died that an xray following that injury would have probably saved his life.

Powerful lesson for a teenager. I've never forgotten.

3. Just for perspective, about 80 people a day commit suicide
in this country. Over 2000 a day make the attempt.

4. My heart weeps for all with mental disturbances that cause them to commit suicide, kill others, and
other acts that deviate from social norms.

People like to quote "If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all." by Noam Chomsky.

IMO if we don't really believe and practice Jefferson's words "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal" and MLK's words "I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear" then we don't have cause to attack others.

7. We had a couple of suicides while I was in high school.
There was about 1,200 kids or less and we had quite a few deaths. A murder, couple of accidents, some illnesses and the two suicides. It was a very hard time there for a couple of years.
