Most of the unemployed no longer receive benefits
Nearly one-third of America's 14 million unemployed have had no job for year or more
msnbc.com news services
November 5, 2011

The jobs crisis has left so many people out of work for so long that most of America's unemployed are no longer receiving unemployment benefits.

Early last year, 75 percent were receiving checks. The figure is now 48 percent — a shift that points to a growing crisis of long-term unemployment. Nearly one-third of America's 14 million unemployed have had no job for a year or more.

Congress is expected to decide by year's end whether to continue providing emergency unemployment benefits for up to 99 weeks in the hardest-hit states. If the emergency benefits expire, the proportion of the unemployed receiving aid would fall further.

Yet for a growing share of the unemployed, a vote in Congress to extend the benefits to 99 weeks is irrelevant. They've had no job for more than 99 weeks. They're no longer eligible for benefits.

1. It makes sense....
The benefits can't be indefinite...

6. Why can't the benefits continue until jobs are provided to those who want to work?

If the Wall Street banksters, corporate executives, the ruling rich and big business are forced to pay taxes we'd have plenty of money for that and a whole lot more.

14. Why not, has the need gone away?
We could do it for a decade for less than a years worth of military spending and probably not too damn much more if we extended.

Now, if you insist that for every 60 billion and benefits that we have to do like 750 billion to a trillion in tax cuts like we did last year then there is a problem but the investment in this program probably generates more to the economy than it costs, it is stimulative. Which means it is net stupid not to keep folks above water.

How are millions without income going to help the broader economy?

17. Why not?
Why can't people get help until there are jobs available?

Should people be abandoned to starve?

18. They won't be indefinite if the "job creators" actually create jobs here.

3. People come to DU at various
times of the day....I'm glad to see this. Only because I'm one of those no longer counted in the Unemployment Statistics.

But you seem to be more concerned with little rules and regulations vs. if you want the american dream, move to Denmark.

:dunce:

10. Show me where else this article appears in the General Discussion Board.

Come on now.

Can you do that?

And if it was, I didn't see that.

Of course, I'm not a discussion board monitor like you apparently are.

20. How does it mean that?
The UE rate is not and never has been based on receipt of benefits.

12. At the Occupy Los Angeles Teach-In yesterday about the
economy, Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich said (and I've seen the figures elsewhere) that 40% of the unemployed don't even qualify for unemployment insurance of any kind whatsoever.

The Unemployment Insurance safety net is very tattered. And the fact that it is a political football the Repukes keep using to extract concession after concession from the Dems shows that it's not much of a safety net at all any more. (Personal Note: UI Extended Benefits are the only thing keeping my head above water right now.)
