First, the BAD news: The earthquake's epicenter is not far from the site of the Black Fox nuclear...
...power plant.

Now the GOOD news: Because of unrelenting protests and legal action in the late 70's and early 80's by Oklahomans like Carrie Barefoot Dickerson and Citizen's Action for Safe Energy (CASE) the nuclear power plant was never built. As its Wiki page puts it:
It is believed to be the only nuclear power plant in the US to be canceled by a combination of legal and citizen action after construction had started.

It is a almost a certainty that, if it had been built, the Black Fox nuclear power plant would have still been in operation when the http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqinthenews/2011/usb0006klz/">5.6 magnitude earthquake struck earlier tonight.

It's not normally the case that we can foresee how much fighting for the safety of our environment pays off. This seems like a nice little reminder about what could have been a nightmare scenario...that never happened...thanks to the work of activists like Carrie.

1. Great reminder...
...that a natural disaster could have been much, much worse--had that plant been built.

Wouldn't it have been wonderful if someone like Carrie Dickerson had lived in Fukushima?

7. Shoreham on Long Island was also cancelled after contruction began
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, or correct Wiki if I'm right. Regardless, yes can protests make a life saving difference. The largest accomplioshment of the anti-nuclear power movement was the fact that for decades after it hit full stride, no new nukes were cleared for construction in the U.S.
