Dogged pursuit to find WWII savior

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Brad Burks couldn't make the final phone call.

He felt stuck, paralyzed even, by an old mystery that wouldn't stop rattling around in his head.

Had it not been for Jack Malloy, I'd be dead.

Brad had found 30 listings for Malloys in Arizona phone books. Sitting alone in his living room, he had dialed the first number at night sometime during the winter of 2008.

Burks, a 30-year-old fundraiser for Creighton Prep High School, was used to cold calling, and so he'd worked out a script that he repeated every time a voice answered on the other end of the line.

"Hello, my name is Brad," he would say. "I live in Omaha, Neb. I'm searching for a John Malloy who served in World War II with my grandfather."
