Accusations of Child Sex, Cover-Up Rock Penn State
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=ap-pennstateex-coach-allegations

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—An explosive sex abuse scandal and allegations of a cover-up rocked Happy Valley after former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, once considered Joe Paterno’s heir apparent, was charged with sexually assaulting eight boys over 15 years. Among the allegations was that a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assault a boy in the shower at the team’s practice center in 2002.

Sandusky retired in 1999 but continued to use the school’s facilities for his work with The Second Mile, a foundation he established to help at-risk kids, where authorities say he encountered the boys. The grand jury investigation also resulted in perjury charges against Tim Curley, Penn State’s athletic director, and Gary Schultz, vice president for finance and business. They were accused of failing to alert police—as required by state law—of their investigation of the allegations.

“This is a case about a sexual predator who used his position within the university and community to repeatedly prey on young boys,” state Attorney General Linda Kelly said Saturday in a statement.

Paterno, who last week became the coach with the most wins in Division I football history, wasn’t charged, and the grand jury report didn’t appear to implicate him in wrongdoing.

2. Too bad it's seen as a football story, instead of a story about powerful men abusing their power.
Sick and sad, all the way around.

4. That's how I see it, too.
I'm not really into sports, so I had no real knowledge about any of the men involved. Sandusky is an important and respected man in field, which makes this a major story.

24. People Serving Their Own Interests in Protecting the Powerful
The grad ass't knew and he took a job to keep quiet.

All these guys knew, and their move to protect the school from scandal is what's going to bring them ALL down. I couldn't be happier about that. I wish more people would wake the fuck up.

3. From what I can gather, Joe Paternal knew about it for a long
time and did nothing. I believe it's time for him to finally retire.

8. My understanding was Paterno blew the whistle on this when he found out.
and that's why he wasn't charged. Maybe I'm wrong though.

10. Joe Paterno went to his boss, Tim Curley
Within the letter of the law, this was his designated action. Curley and Schulz covered it up, according to the indictments.

That said, Paterno did the minimum possible. Essentially, the graduate assistant came to Paterno's house and told him that he'd seen Jerry Sandusky raping a ten year old boy iy in the football team's practice facility showers. And all Paterno did was report that to Curley. If you call *that* "whistleblowing," I'll leave you to it, but it seems a slim action indeed.

And nothing happened. The police never came to see Paterno about what the graduate assistant had told him. Sandusky was never seemingly brought in for questioning. No scandal ricked tiny State College, where Sandusky's charity is one of the biggest in town, and hosts a massive golf tournament every summer that brings in the Who's Who of the wealthy State College community. Nada. Nothing happened. And this didn't strike Paterno as odd? It may not have been his legal duty to do anything more than move the accusation up the line to Curley, but is there no moral responsibility here? This event happened in 2002. Sandusky continued to rape and abuse boys throughout the following seven years, at least, allegedly.

And what about before that? Why did Sandusky retire suddenly in 1999? Could he really have worked alongside these people for 30 years, and just started with these actions in the mid-1990's, per the indictment? Come on. He founded the Second Mile (for "troubled" teenaged and pre-teen boys) in 1977. He waited 17 years to start with the abuse?

Bad. Bad. Bad.

12. I guess Paterno isn't charged w/ failure to report b/c he's technically an employee, rather than an
administrator? So legally all he had to do is report it to his boss--I assume that's the reason Curley and Schultz are charged with failure to report, though I could be wrong. But as you said--minimum possible. Paterno isn't your typical employee. Certainly he's more powerful at Penn State and in State College than Curley and Schultz.

"And what about before that? Why did Sandusky retire suddenly in 1999? There was an investigation in 1998 as well, but no charges were filed. Schultz knew about that investigation when he was told about the 2002 incident. And still apparently did nothing. And he had oversight of the university police department. I find it pretty unlikely that Paterno didn't know about the 1998 investigation as well.

20. You're right, it's pretty weak on Paterno's part.
He should be ashamed of himself, even if he's legally in the clear. Thanks for the additional info.

9. I've called him Joe Paternal for years. I know what his name is.
BTW, the Nebraska Cornhuskers are going to kick butt this coming Saturday. After the embarrassing loss yesterday, they'll be loaded for bear and ready to run right over the Penn State defense. Woohoo!

7. Sick loser preyed on young at-risk boys because he figured no one cared about them, and
if he bought them enough snowboards and football tickets they'd stay quiet. Seems hard to believe this could have gone on for at least a decade--a lot of people turned their heads and left those children to suffer.

14. This thread is disturbing...why the cheering and joking on a thread
about systemic child rape? I'm sorry, but the whooping it up and talking about the next game in this context is part of the problem in sports culture. Disgusting if you ask me.

26. What the Hell Are You Talking About?
Edited on Mon Nov-07-11 12:36 PM by NashVegas
One person in the thread takes a moment to leave a few words about wanting to see Penn State get their ass kicked and that pollutes the whole thread?

Do you have a FB account? It's *shocking* how silent any number of people are on this topic. That should give you a clue as to how stunned people are, and how many fear to react.

Processing junk of this sort isn't easy. There's no standard.

15. hmm ... early teens ... is the statute of limitations up?
and, if not, why does the Right allow Ted the Ped Nugent be a spokesperson? 15 could be argued as "early teen" ... only the 3rd year of being a "teenager" ...

I found it amusing that a recent rerun of "That 70's Show" had the one girl go backstage at a Ted (the ped) Nugent show ... and he did an innuendo - "I'll let you touch my guitar" ... actually, back then, he would have had her performing a sex act on him (and drugs were implied in the backstage area ... "Are you all high? Oh, yeah ...")

for some reason, the normal rules about this shit don't apply to them, and criminals like the Pope can conspire to cover up their shit for decades with a slap on the wrist or less.

The president of the university initially said they had his "complete confidence" and "unconditional support." I guess the BOT set that straight last night.

27. a good quick bio of the accused:

It has been over 10 years since Sandusky left Penn State to devote all of his time to the Second Mile, a charitable organization he and his wife started in 1977 as a sanctuary, a safe house, for children at risk.

It is a noble undertaking, and it has grown and grown, and it is estimated that it reaches 100,000 kids a year. The name comes from the Sermon on the Mount - "And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile."

Along the way, Jerry and Dottie, unable to have children of their own, began to adopt. They found they couldn't stop, and reached six before they finally got around to stopping. Oh, and there were foster children, too. Always room for one more, somehow.

His mother, Evie, said in an interview in 1982: "It's the way he's always been. I guess it's his nature that he's never quite happy unless he's helping someone else."
