Super green, superyacht
Of course you have to be super rich.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/18/ocean-empire-lsv-is-the-self-sufficient-superyacht-for-the-super/

It looks like your luxury extra-national seafaring utopia just got one step closer to reality. The Ocean Empire Life Support Vessel is a 144-foot Catamaran Superyacht manufactured by Sauter Carbon Offset Design, and it features not only "all of the hotel amenities of a luxury global voyager" but two hydroponic farms and fishing facilities and three sustainable power sources: a 400 square meter 70kw solar array, an auxiliary 80 square meter (200kw) automated SkySail that drives the ship to 18+ knots and charges her battery systems

Alas, I'll just have to hope some of this cool technology will work it's way down to boats that I can afford.

2. You know I'm hoping they can make a combination sail and solar array
Sails cover huge areas, they are in the sun all day long, cover them with solar arrays then remove the engine and fuel tanks...add batteries and electric motor...totally green and limitless.

4. Not a bad idea, but sails aren't always up and the position they are in may not
lend themselves to maximize the solar input.

Maybe better to cover decks with solar panels. We get away with 2 panels, but would be better with three. Wind generators are also good additions that work under sail and whenever you are at anchor in a windy location.

Anyway, you can do this very, very cheaply. Not a boat like the one that is featured here, but certainly one you can live on.

5. Nine more years until we cast off

An Island Packet is certainly no super yacht, but I don't want a crew anyway.

7. Beauty. We looked at an Island Packet when we were shopping for our current boat.
Should take you anywhere... too bad it's so far away.

8. Love Island Packet.
Bob Johnson designs great boats. The full keel has a lot of benefits.

6. True, but if someone is going to build a super yacht anyway
It might as well be one that isn't burning 1000's of gallons of diesel fuel.

$1bn Streets of Monaco yacht a floating city

A LAVISH new yacht recreating the billionaire's playground of Monaco is set to become the world's most expensive.

The staggering 155m Streets of Monaco yacht is expected to cost over $1.1 billion to build and is modelled on a section of Monte Carlo.

Currently in the design stage, the super-ship will feature smaller versions of the state’s famous landmarks such as the Monte Carlo Casino and racetrack, as well as swimming pools, tennis courts, a cinema, a go kart track and a Hotel de Paris.

15. "Life support vessel".

I get the impression this item is being marketed as a self sustaining escape hatch for the super rich in case of nuclear war/anarchy/societal collapse/etc.

Hopefully this yacht includes a weapons system as well. They'll need it to protect themselves from pirates.
