2. I would rather he denounced all pedophiles, all murderers, all rip off artists...
...anyone who takes advantage of the elderly.

To take the chance of damming, demeaning, damaging an entire profession because of a few? Nope, I don't think it's wise.

5. This is a national movement facing a national problem
So the leader of this nation should openly denounce the unconstitutional reactions by the police

Since I doubt he/ she even knows that.

This is so 1960s like, except for dogs, that yes the POTUS must speak.

In that we agree.

16. "Anyone who takes advantage of the elderly,"
...like Republicans and Third Way Democrats who would THIEVE from the Social Security subsistence checks and Medicare/Medicaid benefits of millions of Americans already desperately struggling in this economy.

7. Oh come on--that's like suggesting he is in favor of it, and needs to correct himself.
Nope. Sorry. I can't get behind this. Your heart is in the right place, but it's, in essence, an accusation.

No one thinks police brutality is a good idea. I doubt Obama needs to ponder this matter and develop a POV, either.

State governments are responsible for the conduct of state police officers, and local municipalities are responsible for the conduct of local police officers. It is not appropriate for the President to be sticking his beak in the business of state and local governments--he's the chief executive, not the King.

Obama has already "stuck his nose" in state and local government business.

21. If you're talking about the Republicans handing Obama's ass to him over Gates..
The Republicans hand Obama his ass over every single thing he does.

Not to mention that Obama publicly commented negatively on Bradley Manning, a case where Obama is the commander in chief of the very jurors that will sit for the trial.

17. What "unconstitutional activity?" You're the judge, jury and executioner, now?
A little due process might be nice.

Obama needs to stay out of it.

He's not judge, jury or executioner EITHER.

You might need a refresher course.

19. So you are saying that without any investigation, Obama should be judge, jury and executioner?
Let the wheel of justice spin, bring the guilty bastard in!

It's an unattractive argument you're making.

Nothwithstanding that commentary on local issues is INAPPROPRIATE, and even more so before there's been any investigation/discipline/judgment by "appropriate" authority...you want a KING, not a President.

Move to Jordan, they've got one there.

Stop trying to move the goalposts with your "Waah, you don't CARE" false accusations. Your mind is made up, so knock yourself out. You certainly aren't changing mine with your shifting arguments.

Don't hold your breath waiting for your dream to come true.

20. Not shifting arguments, trying to get a full grasp if where you stand.
Ok then, if there either is no investigation, or there are investigations that contradict video evidence (I.e. BART officer that shot unarmed, handcuffed African-American youth on the groun in the back)- would you still be opposed? Plus these petitions (as another DUer pointed out) are mostly for show and an email response, I am interested in what their response will be

23. I think I've been quite clear. The President has no business sticking his beak
into the supervision or discipline of local police forces. That's not part of his portfolio. He's the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, not the local police departments. They have bosses of their own--police chiefs, who report to mayors, generally. Send your little petition to them.

I will not sign your petition. I don't want a King; we have a President. Leave the business of the states and municipaities to the states and municipalities.

Let Presidents be Presidents. This "Every Little Sparrow" shit is noxious. The President has plenty of fish to fry without trying to be Overseer of every damn mayor of a major municipality. Stop asking him to do those sorts of things. He's busy.

How clear is that? Clear enough?

26. Then I guess we have to agree to disagree
Though you still didn't answer my "what if?". But that is what is beautiful about true democracy. And you know Obama himself probably doesn't have anything to do with these, it's his administration- I would just like to actually hear what they think.

Obama is not the president of New York or Oakland or Seattle or any other city.

28. You're looking for a response from someone who has no power
or authority to do anything and who really has no business being involved anyway? Just to get a response?

I'd suggest starting here, if anywhere:

30. This isn't about "states rights" as governments don't have rights.
Edited on Mon Nov-07-11 11:20 AM by NYC Liberal
But we do have a federal system. There is a separation of powers between the national government and state governments: go read the Constitution. Obama has zero authority in this area and has no reason to get involved - nor should he.

The people who are involved are the mayors, city councils, and local police departments.
