South Africa Bans AXE “Sexy Angels” Ad; Is It Offensive To Christians?



AXE has gotten the axe in South Africa.

The male deodorant brand, known as Lynx in South Africa, was banned for depicting over-sexed and scantily clad angels falling from heaven and descending upon earth after smelling one mere mortal’s attractive armpits in a 60-second commercial. In the clip, the angels track down the object of their affection and smash their halos as a voice from above says, “Even angels will fall.”

Well, one Christian man didn’t fall for the commercial and complained to South Africa’s Advertising Standards Authority about the ad for implying that angels would forsake God for a man with an awesome deodorant. Apparently in South Africa, one pissed off individual is all it takes. The ASA ruled in his favor stating: “The problem is not so much that angels are used in the commercial, but rather that the angels are seen to forfeit, or perhaps forgo their heavenly status for mortal desires. This is something that would likely offend Christians in the same manner as it offended the complainant.”

Axe isn’t giving up on their naughty angels. The company has started a Facebook petition page to get the divine entities out of “detention.” As of November 6th, the page had 12, 416 likes.

5. If you could ban ads just for being annoying...

well, there wouldn't be very many left. This concept of angel is based on a caricature of the actual origins of the term. Anyone who finds this offensive doesn't even understand the basic tenants of their own mythology.
