OMG, Brilliant! Occupy Denver elects a Border Collie as leader
after the mayor asked them to elect a leader who could negotiate with the city about the occupation's camp site.

Try to get a Repugnant to get a large herd of sheep into a trailer....no way. I saw an exhibit of this and I was just amazed by the Border Collie.

Is your Border Collie a pet or a working farm dog?

61. pet
He was rescued from a shelter where he had spent two years. He's about ten years old and I have had him for nearly three after my family member who rescued him could not keep him from herding the toddler.

He's a wonderful dog. He loves to herd the two kitties in the house. Oddly enough, he ignores the flock of Canada geese that wander the yard occasionally. I'd like to see him with sheep -- he's never been around them.

69. I had a Border Collie...
... when my parents were giving homesteading a try. He would herd everything OUT of our yard - sheep, chickens, turkeys, pigs - everything. He was all like "You guys stay together - and LEAVE!"

Probably a pretty good attitude when negotiating with politicians.

great. I wonder if animals/dogs can smell 'greed.' I know they can smell 'fear.'

I wonder if we could get the collies to herd the Koch's and the Wall Street Greeders.

You know how a dog can come in contact with someone and just 'grrrrrrs' at them for no reason...at least no reason that a human can detect??? I always thought the dog was telling me that this person was not worthy of attention and to stay away.

Animals are so much smarter than humans.

It's genius and funny and it's the best possible response to the demand for a leader to "negotiate with".

14. Yeah -- isn't a leaderless self-governing entity something the
far right ought to love?? I don't know what the political persuasion is of those who are insisting on an elected leader, but the rightwing should heartily approve since they're the ones who hate government.

So here's NO GOVERNMENT. Deal with it.

Because now there's a "leader", as silly as the whole thing is.

I think a much better response would have been for the Occupiers to say the city negotiates with ALL or none. It shows they are serious about solidarity with the people.

I'm sorry, but when they pull stunts like this, it only makes them look like a bunch of junior high school jokers.

She says aussies are as good or better herders, and calmer and more sensible-minded, to boot.

Of course, she's a bit biased. Still, she's happy to see her cousin elected, and thinks more working dogs should be elected to various offices. She'd like to see a border collie as senate majority leader and an aussie as SOH.

59. My Border Collie/Heeler mix thinks Australian Shepherds are fine field workers but....
They are weak on some of the skills necessary to run a successful outfit. She says they are lousy writing out bills of sale, can't balance the checkbook for squat, and can't remember important telephone numbers, let alone punch up the number or even keep the damn cell phone charged. GPS? Forget it, they can't even fold a road map. She swears it is hilarious watching an Australian Shepherd try to back-up a stock trailer.

Still my girl says they are dependable out in the field and easy marks at the Friday night poker game, plus she loves their companionship when she drives up to Idaho for the annual sheep auction.

71. heh.
Mine reminds me that she keeps count just fine. Since she was old enough to go out on the trail, she's in charge of keeping track of everyone. She plays tail guard to make sure nobody falls behind, except when she circles around to the front and does a head count as riders pass by, until the last rider shows up and she moves back in behind them.

I'm the one who can't back up a stock trailer; my spatial sense is pathetic. She knows enough to stay out of the way.

My aussie says she'll work with a border collie any day, but they're too high strung to play poker with. It's true she's not a great poker player, though. If I'm playing, she spends too much time worrying about whether everyone understands that she's my gatekeeper, and if I'm not, she'll wander off to find me.
