White House Wikileaks Protest: Dan Ellsberg Puts His Body on the Line
by Jon Queally
December 16, 2010

Pentagon Papers leaker Daniel Ellsberg defended Julian Assange and his alleged source Bradley Manning as "patriots" at a D.C. protest Thursday organized by Veterans For Peace. Ellsberg, 79, called terrorism charges against them "absurd and slanderous" before heading to the White House to be chained to its gate.

Ellsberg Calls Assange a Hero
By Cameron Joseph
December 16, 2010

The most famous whistle-blower of the Vietnam era hailed the leading figures behind the WikiLeaks document dump as heroes today, before heading off to chain himself to the White House fence as a protest against efforts to prosecute them.

On the day WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange made bail to win release from the London prison where he has been held on sexual assault charges, Pentagon Papers leaker Daniel Ellsberg defended Assange and his alleged source, Army Pfc. Bradley Manning. Manning is being held in a military prison at Quantico, Va.

"I see Bradley Manning as a patriot, and I’m sure Julian Assange is an Australian patriot," Ellsberg said in a press conference today. "To call them terrorists is not only mistaken, it’s absurd and slanderous. Neither of them are any more terrorists than I am, and I’m not."

Afterwards, the 79-year-old Ellsberg headed to the White House to be chained to its snowy gates as part of a protest organized by Veterans for Peace, which also organized the press conference along with GetUp!, an Australian activist group. Ellsberg was one of dozens arrested, the Associated Press reported.

He's still in solitary, last I checked and tends to get overlooked in the uproar over Julian.

18. I hate the phrase "Man Up"
because of the bullshit sexism of it. But the "intended" ethos underlying it - the honesty and integrity and courage regardless of the personal cost - really applies to folks like Daniel Ellsberg and Bernnie Sanders and all the men and women on the left who go out and do what they have to do day after day after fucking day just because it is right for our brothers and sisters and for our communities.

So the next time some piece of shit like Palin or Rove or some other asshole says people on the left have to "man up," we can just point to folks like these.

Daniel Ellsberg was a "whistle blower", while Assange is branded a "terrorist".

For those of you who think we are not a fascist state, think again.

Dangerous why? because he had an opinion.

On behalf of Australians I would like to thank Daniel for
saying that Julian is an Australian patriot.
But on this occasion. without being too parochial, I'd like to
say that for his efforts and opinions, JA is a world citizen

If only the rest of DU would undrape themselves from their flags and get behind Manning and Assange.
Too many DU'ers keep falling for the media trick of attacking the leaker's rather than looking into the leaks themselves.
The real enemy of the U.S. is not the small terrorist within a cave. It is here within our own country and in our government.
It is greed, corruption, lies, and fear. It is murder. It is theft. It is hate. It is absolute power.
Manning needs us to stand up for him now. He has stood up for us.

78. Thank you, Daniel Elsberg for your sacrifices ... Bradley Manning's courage/Assange's courage ....
Fine example of those willing to put their lives on the line to try to help us --

the right wing only wins by violence -- stolen elections -- and lies.

It is our MIC which must be dismantled and defeated -- it's warmongering and warmaking.

84. You are so right. Our MIC is bleeding us dry as a country
where we have people no longer able to afford shelter, health care, life-saving medical treatments and prescriptions, decent child care, transportation, where we've depleted our own childrens' futures of any prosperous economy and where we spend instead astounding billions and trillions abroad making war and visiting misery daily on others already even far more impoverished... it is unforgivable.

Daniel Elsberg, a man of a lifelong courage of his convictions and a true winter soldier. Shame and a curse on the fascist facilitators that have brought us to this day.
