What do all these have in common? The same as death tax. They are all creations of the RW. In some cases...frank Luntz if names have to be named. It's time, high time, to stop repeating them.

4. She was a Queen??
How could you tell? Was it an actual ruling position or more of a nation's figure head?

And I'm assuming you mean an actual woman of some sort of royal house/lineage and not a man in women's clothes?

Oh wait, your moniker indicates that you are British. Were you actually referring to the Queen of England and making a snide comment on the nature of her relationship to your country?

9. She was a "welfare queen" in the Raygun definition of the term...
...wearing what I assume were fake furs, buying her groceries with food stamps and getting into her new Cadillac which she had left running in the parking lot...

21. As I said bellow
The modern day version drives a benz. There are a few people really down who still have a few trappings of their former life.

But for the most part it's meant to attack the system, not attack what this is, a true symptom of an economy at crisis. I have no doubt you did. You just need the context

A Benz tried to hit my hubby the other way, late model. Then hit a taxi.

It happens every time. Some people fall very fast.

39. They exist. There are people out there gaming the system
But they are so few and far between that they count for almost nothing.

"Welfare Queen" is like "Honest Politician" you may find one but you really have to look hard.

Edited on Tue Nov-08-11 05:25 PM by RebelOne
bought a ton of groceries and paid for them with food stamps. When I went out to the parking lot, the lady was loading all those groceries into the trunk of a brand-new Cadillac. I was astounded.

2. According to Republicans, there are no poor people in America
Just welfare queens who take advantage of the system.

They're projecting again. It's not welfare queens. It's bankers and industrialists. It's the people with Wall Street addresses that receive farm subsidy checks.

Nancy Pelosi is among the richest members of Congress,<107> with an estimated net worth of approximately $58 million, the 12th highest estimated net worth in Congress, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics<108>

driving up to the food stamp center to pick up their welfare checks/food stamps (many years ago)...oh, and wearing their fur coats.

12. While there are an incredibly small number of these people you mention...
...it is childish to pretend they simply DO NOT EXIST.

Stereotypes aren't made by conjuring descriptions out of thin air, they're made by appealing to something that a person believes -most- people have seen -ONCE-, and then blowing it way the fuck out of proportion. That's the 'nugget of truth' that all stereotypes are based on, and it's why stereotypes are a powerful tool of classification.

If I told you that the stereotype of a Jewish person was someone who was typically poor and liked to eat pork and beans, you'd call me an idiot because that is not something that -most- people can relate to. It wouldn't suddenly become a meme repeated by everyone.

But are the 'welfare queens' common? Hell no. But it only makes us look silly to claim they don't exist.

Who is now hard in luck. We see a few here with beemers and benz. They are just as poor. Really people need to stop doing this. And yes, they coud sell the car...short term it be good, but they still need it to apply for jobs and shit like that.

23. Yeah, selling the car might help in the short term.....
but really it would only be a quick fix and not gonna boost anyone out of dire straits for any length of time. It would probably end up being more of a hassle to do without a car (depending on where you live)than to take the few bucks you'd probably end up getting.

25. Exactly. I wouldn't dare say they weren't poor, or make fun of their situation.
I've been in varying states of poor my entire adult life. It's just one of those 'things', when I hear people say that such-and-such DOESN'T EXIST, it's a good way to get our message tuned out by those who -may- be otherwise willing to listen to it. I'm probably over-picky about it, but in order to understand WHY the opposition believes something, we must FIRST be honest with ourselves. In this case, it's a matter of a perception (and a false one, at that), playing to prejudicial fears. THAT is what we have to oppose -- not that the Republicans are 'just lying about welfare queens' because it only takes one person to have -ever- seen -anyone- that they fed into that stereotype for them to completely tune us out.

And really, anyone who is currently poor and has a Caddy SUV is -hurting- worse than many because of the damn gas mileage of those things. My Focus gets 30-some-odd highway, those things get what...10? 12?
