Should we focus more on Congress and less on the President? |
|
I know it pisses many off for someone to say we need to support President Obama because he is the lesser of the evils. But, does it really matter who is President? I mean I realize the President has the bully pulpit, can veto nominates Supreme Court Justices and can issue executive orders. However, if we focused on the Senate and House and get a 60 plus majority in both wouldn't that be more powerful than the president? And, if we could get that super majority plus a Democrat President even one who doesn't alway do what progressives want mean even more power? I know I am pipe dreaming, although if the 99% would stand together it would be easy there is no way they would. My Congressperson doesn't even campaign anymore he is so assured of being elected.

1. 60 in the Senate is a near impossibility this cycle; but retaking the House is viable. |
|
In fact, I think we could very well lose the Senate unless we can pull an upset or two in places like AZ and TX.
Retaking the House needs to be a close priority #2 behind re-electing Obama. We must maintain control of at least one chamber of Congress in case the unthinkable happens and one the crazies defeats Obama.

3. Firstly, you've been had and so have I. Second, I've been looking at the numbers for House and... |

...Senate and at least in the House, there's no fucking way we're taking the House back. It's just not going to happen.
If you think I'm foolin' ya, pull up who's running in 2012 in the House and Senate and look at our numbers. Look what kind of numbers we have to pull just to break even.
It's starting to sink in that we're heading for a disappointing fucking four years, starting in 2012.
If you or ANYONE can show me how we can realistically gain a majority in the House in 2012, I really wanna see that. I don't want to hear "We can do it", I wanna hear who gets elected where that causes it. I'm not so sure about the Senate. I have been spending some spare time trying to pull enough information together but I'm just not sure.
Since the 99% have no legislative recourse to fix this entirely via voting, I don't have a clear idea exactly what avenues are open. I really don't.
I've voted straight Democratic all my life and I'll continue to do so in 2012. We have some really excellent big D Democratic representation here in Oregon but the rest of the country- Jesus I feel for some of the DUers out there who are forced to live in Repukeland.
OnEdit: I meant to add this bit but edited it out by accident: Getting our ass beat in 2010 was a much bigger deal than I thought and it's going to cast a long shadow...at least till 2016.

5. In Senate, 23 D/I and 10 R incumbent seats are up for election. Ds will be lucky to hold the Senate |
|
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate_elections,_2012The are 6 to 8 Democrat/Independent senators retiring, and only 2 Republicans retiring. It is easier to take over an open seat left by a retirement than it is to win one from an incumbent.
