Non-profits are now coming under the knife
Apparently the Obama administration is now wanting to cut the tax deduction that people get for giving to charity. Frankly, in this time of economic distress, when we need charities the most, when we need all the jobs we can get, including those in the non-profit sector, I find this move appalling.

Yes, it only effects those with a large income, but the fact of the matter is that non-profits depend on the wealthy in order to survive.

And the people who depend on non-profits to survive, what are they supposed to do? Die?

Sorry, but this is another foolish move. If you want spending cuts, cut the military. If you want more revenue, then discontinue the Bush tax cuts(whoops, too late, they were extended). But don't continue to take pound after pound of flesh from those who can least afford it.

A couple of links for those who are interested.

2. The Gates and Buffets are using this to control their money after they pass.
The US needs that estate tax.

8. Ah, so you're willing to throw out the good that many charities do
In order to get back at Gates and Buffet.

The people need that charity money, and have nowhere else to raise it. The US on the other hand can cut back its military budget and tax the rich.

10. Frankly I don't see why any wealthy person wouldn't use this method to keep control of all their $.
Look at how Gates is using his foundation to redo education. It's undemocratic.

11. And look at all the good that other wealthy people are doing for the community
For example, from recent threads here on DU, we see where Lady Gaga, Clinton, and many others are doing good by giving. You want to wipe that out, all to get at Gates?

12. Charity should come from the heart. If its only there to escape taxes that is warped.

5. Does no one understand how to read?
The plan, which would take effect in 2013, would apply to married couples with an adjusted gross income of at least $250,000 ($200,000 for individuals)

I doubt it will affect most people.

9. No, it won't effect most people,
Except those who depend upon that charitable largesse simply to survive.
