Right Wing Kate O'Beirne calls parents of school lunch recipients child abusers
O’BEIRNE: And then the title of our gathering is so crucial; “Less of Washington and More of Ourselves”. The federal school lunch program and now breakfast program and I guess in Washington DC, dinner program are pretty close to being sacred cows… broad bipartisan support. And if we’re going to ask more of ourselves, my question is what poor excuse for a parent can’t rustle up a bowl of cereal and a banana? I just don’t get why millions of school children qualify for school breakfasts unless we have a major wide spread problem with child neglect.

You know, I mean if that’s how many parents are incapable of pulling together a bowl of cereal and a banana, then we have problems that are way bigger than… that problem can’t be solved with a school breakfast, because we have parents who are just criminally… ah… criminally negligent with respect to raising children.

And yet, that’s the kind of program that has huge bipartisan support with very little thought about why we’re now feeding children. Talk about a fundamental parental responsibility. In what sense can we begin asking the “more of ourselves” piece to go with this less government?

5. I taught at a Harlem day care center where we had two meals ready each day.
Some of my kids went home to just chips and Pepsi. I made sure they ate EVERYTHING we had to offer as I couldn't rely on their homes giving them adequate nutrition.

7. Damn kids.
If only they'd picked better, richer parents.

Where's their personal responsibility?

You know it's crazy when they're griping about feeding children... :wow:

9. If memory serves me,
the reason why these programs were started in the first place was due to the '30s Depression, and people were so poor that their kids were malnourished, later making malnourished soldiers in WWII. God forbid nazi party members like Kate actually do any research. We're smack in the 2nd Great Depression, caused by her precious GW Hoover. And since both parties decided that our country will be in a perpetual state of war, there's no choice but to continue programs like this.

12. That was part of it
The main reason it started was to deal with surplus agricultural supplies so that prices didn't take a nose dive. That's why the program is administered by the USDA.

15. Is she old enough to remember when the Senate delegation (including
Robert Kennedy) visited rural Mississippi and found people with no food in the house?

There are two reasons why parents "can't rustle up a bowl of cereal and a banana."

1. They're too poor, especially at the end of the month. Back in the days when clergy were poorly paid, we sometimes had VERY frugal meals at the end of the month.

2. Their own lives are too chaotic to handle everyday routines.
