Democrat Bellone beats Carpenter for Suffolk executive

Democrat Steve Bellone cruised to a resounding victory Tuesday over Republican Angie Carpenter in the race to succeed controversial Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy.

In Nassau, control of the county Legislature remained in doubt as Democrats tried to cut into Republicans' 11-8 advantage. Democrats pulled off an upset in one key race, but other races were too close to call.

With almost 90 percent of precincts reporting, Bellone had 56 percent of the vote, to Carpenter's 43 percent.

In a hotly contested Nassau County Legislature race, early results showed that Democrat Carrie Solages beat Republican incumbent John Ciotti in the 3rd Legislative District. Solages was not ready to say he won. But he said they were "very close."

Erie County Executive Chris Collins will not be in office next year.

Collins conceeded the race to democrat Mark Poloncarz.

With 83% of the votes counted, Poloncarz has a 54% lead over Collins.
