Little town in northern MI supports teh gays!!1!!
Yesterday here in beautiful Traverse City, Michigan we took a big step in pushing forward "the gay agenda". I couldn't be more proud!

TC is "Open & Inclusive"

TRAVERSE CITY — A long-simmering debate over homosexual rights and protections in Traverse City came to a resounding close on election night.

So said supporters of an ordinance that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation.

By a nearly two-to-one margin, the city voted 2,818 to 1,661 — 63 percent to 37 percent — to keep a year-old ordinance intact.

"It sends a message that Traverse City is an open and inclusive place," said Ross Richardson, of Traverse City Equality, a committee that encouraged voters to support the ordinance. "It defines what our values are."

A big win by a wide margin! So many really great folks here worked hard to make this happen. So proud of my little city! :toast:

3. I know, right?
Funny thing is this county is really red. The city itself is blue and it was a city ordinance so the rest of the county couldn't vote it down, city voters only! There are a lot of Rethugs in the region crying in their coffee this morning!

4. Well we actually picked up two township commissioner's seats and scored a school board post.
Other than that, the area pretty much went red (as usual).

8. It was close. Two votes (wife and I) actually contributed to narrow victories.

10. Well, I didn't mean that any of them were BY two points, but they were fuckin' close.

On Edit:

I ran the campaign for a school board candidate who didn't even try working his own campaign. He lost by 13 votes to someone who spent hundreds of hours and as much in dollars trying to take the seat.

15. Just shows that people
can be much smarter and capable than the politicians. Good for all the people that voted for this.

16. Open and inclusive? Why? Because nearly half the voters wanted to keep the ordinance?
Meh.
As they say.

26. It may appear so on paper
but it was right-wingers who stirred this pot and wanted it to go to a vote. They worked very hard to misrepresent it. Starting days before the election they were out with really big signs on the street corners. The signs said something like "Vote "NO" Don"t support discrimination!" Up to their old tricks of misrepresenting the issues.

A lot of very good people worked tirelessly to make sure everyone understood the issue and the importance of getting out the vote. The results were the highest non-election year turn out in forever.

You can dismiss the effort if you want but I am here in the trenches and personally believe all that work deserves better. We'll have to agree to disagree I guess.

There's a strong "hippy" contingent there. This doesn't surprise me at all.
