1. I'm still amazed at how much importance (and money) is given to school sports.
It was a clique long before I was in high school and still is.

3. how does the timing of his resignation affect the bowl invitations?
Seems like the bowl invitation process depends on everything down to which way the wind blows outside the selection committee's office. So I don't see the connection (yet).

25. I believe the OP means he will remain on the coaching staff
to help coach the team to a victory, and/or get a sympathy selection by a bowl committee since it is his last season. I think Bobby Bowden got that his last year coaching...minus the sexual abuse of children of course.

29. concerns that if Paterno was replaced now it could impact the rest of the season
PSU is 8-1 now with 4 more games (or maybe 5).

Today PSU would be a shoo-in for a bowl game but if they start tanking because a new coach was put in there mid-season then they could still be out of a Bowl Bid

4. Each football game is worth at least 50 million to the school
So we know what the school values kids at. Less than that.

5. it's part of the culture of big-time college sports
people don't want to admit, but this scandal could have easily happened at ANY BCS school (I mean specifically the systematic cover-up, shedding of responsibility and convenient amnesia of certain events)

Nobody is looking to punish the athletes.

I am certain they can play football without Paterno.

42. Not UDel?
Figured with the cost of colleges these day send your kid to UDel for 2 years. Then after that let the kid goes where he wants and you would have saved about $20k on tuition.

32. I can't believe a bowl would invite him
and I could see an active push to not watch or attend said game. I wouldn't want to be in charge of the bowl that rewards Penn State this season.

I can see letting the players (who did nothing wrong) play out the final weeks of their season and then let the coaches walk away at the end of the season. But since the stink goes from president on down, I just can't see putting this team in a bowl game. Who'd want to give money to this school until everyone involve in this is long gone. Not just the coaches, the whole management structure.

37. Several bowls have tie-ins with the Big Ten
the lowest one in the pecking order, either the new Dallas Football Classic or the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl, might get stuck with them.

Or they could win their division, which they are currently leading, then win the Big Ten championship game, and voila! They get an automatic BCS bid. :puke:

21. There is no other conclusion to draw. Nobody cared about those young boys--nobody.
Not if it got in the way of football. I have many family and friends who attended PSU, I grew up in PA--football worship run amok. I hope the school is sued out of existence.

Personally I think they ought to raze the entire AD and then salt the earth so nothing will ever grow there again.

36. They're already bowl-eligible
in fact, they could end up in the Big Ten championship game, with a BCS berth on the line. :puke:

Otherwise, who wants 'em? They could end up in the Big Ten's lowest-tier bowl.
