I can't tell about that...I've been wrong both ways.

1. In my experience, I can tell if I've made a personal connection with the interviewer--
chitchat flows easily, they speak in a way that makes me sound like I have some sort of future there, as if they're mentally fitting me into the job and considering what sort of training and scheduling I'd need.

2. I remember my last job interview, for the last job I had before retiring...
Everyone was very positive and upbeat, like that.

But the clincher was when my interviewer took me into a classroom and told me that this was where I'd learn how to do the job. She said "This will be your classroom."

Well, yeah.

I was a nurse, getting ready to go to work for the blood services division of the Red Cross. There's a lot to blood banking, more than you might think.

Anyway, I knew. This was said to me before the job offer arrived.

And all the jobs I've had had the same sort of feeling. The positive, glad to meet you sort of thing. Positive answers to my questions.

Good luck to you.

4. 3 different art gallery jobs - years ago.
Edited on Wed Nov-09-11 12:50 PM by firehorse
First scenario: I knew I had the job when the dynamic changed with me asking all the questions and the interviewer was eating up my questions with enthusiastic responses. The job was in the bag.

The second scenario, I knew I didn't have a chance in hell the moment I entered the room. I had all the right qualifications and referrals, but knew it was doomed for sure when the interview switched from English to French. The job did not require French at all. They later told me I was over qualified.

Another time, I went after a job that was already promised to someone else. I offered to work for free for a week, and they gave me the job on the spot.

5. The last interview I had
I thought, no way would I get the job. I did. That was years and years ago.

6. If you can come up with a clever answer to make the interviewer laugh, you are in

Back in my early 30s, when I was looking into changing careers, I was asked why and I responded "Well, it was a great thing to do in my twenties". The interviewer laughed out loud and understood that I was trying to improve myself etc etc etc.

I was in. I ended up not liking the job and quit but that has nothing to do with your question.

7. I knew one series of interviews weren't going well when the interviewer started talking about golf
Not in a "chit-chat,look we're bonding" way, but in the "Wow, it is apparent you're not going to be working in this group and we still have 20 minutes to kill before your next interview" way.

8. The biggest clue I've noticed is the "office tour"
If you don't get one after the interview, you probably didn't get the job.

The last time that happened to me I was offered the job before I had time to drive back home.

9. Generally yes. It's typically in the eye contact.
If the point person seems eager to break eye contact with you, you didn't likely get it. If instead, they seem solicitous, you probably have a very good chance.
