1. Not sure it's legit, but it looks cool.
No video of the take off...you can't paddle into a wave that big, you need to towed or dropped by heli. If you're going to do that, why wouldn't you record the whole thing? I have to look into this one more before I believe it. Surfer Mag's website is a good start.

8. It's the only way you can catch a wave that size.

7. Big wave surfing is one of the most amazing things to watch.
I would like to know the speed he was going while riding that wave.

9. 90 feet? 30 meters amounts to about 98'!
A wave of almost 100'? Unheard of!

17. That's all I was saying...vid doesn't show tow-in or take off, and cuts away quickly.

Not a very good historical record, but others posters are saying a more complete video is on Grind. Haven't checked it out yet 'cuz I'm on my phone, and I think Grind uses Flash video.

EDIT: much better video on Grind (not Flash!), but still really short. Pretty damned impressive!

16. Watching those moving mountains of water gives me a sick, dizzy feeling
The word "awesome" is way overused but it applies to these waves.

18. In the late 1970s, I had a chance to go sailing off San Diego
It was a 29-foot sailboat and there were about half a dozen of us who were invited. We all met at the sailboat, moored in San Diego harbor. Well, we started out to round Point Loma--it was choppy but fun! We were tacking with other sailboats and I thought I could really get use to this!

Then we rounded Point Loma and got out into the Pacific. The swells were larger and slower and I felt a little dizzy and nauseous. Up and down...up and down...went the boat and my stomach! I thought then maybe I couldn't get use to this after all!

It was a fun experience, but I don't know if I can do it again...
