What is OWS really about? Class Consciousness, in a nutshell
Edited on Wed Nov-09-11 08:53 PM by Taverner
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Class_consciousness

Americans are realizing they are not the 1%, and never will be

Americans are realizing they will never be rich

Americans are realizing where they sit in the Capitalist Caste System - near the bottom

Hard work, Intelligence, "Gumption" and Will are thwarted by alienation that is the Capitalist system

Take a minute to read up on Marx

Whether you are a Capitalist, a Socialist, a Marxist or something else - Class Consciousness is happening

And whether you think Socialism is a bad idea or not, Marx provides the greatest critique of Capitalism ever created, bar none

This is why Marx is being taught as part of many MBA programs

Struggle Theory is real

And Class Consciousness is the inevitable result

You cannot deny this

2. The key takeaway from Jefferson is that self-criticism is ESSENTIAL
Whether it be by media, government or elsewhere

And that was the Leninist weak spot

It could not be self-critical, hence, it was doomed

4. That was the STALINIST weak spot........
That lack of self criticism. Lenin himself could and did change his mind when events proved him wrong. Stalin didn't have the self confidence to be able to admit he was wrong.

3. That's why even some people on "our side" don't get OWS
Too many of us have forgotten our class consciousness, imo.

6. It's not class warfare. It's the recognition class warfare is already being waged. On us.

7. You are right, and I'll be happy to read up on it.

It feels so liberating to finally start breaking through the all-American, or uniquely American, taboo about class consciousness. We aren't even supposed to think about it, let alone talk about it. It was only after OWS took off that I began to hear the term "working class" applied to Americans. If it was ever used it wasn't very common. Everyone was supposedly in the middle class, upper or lower but still middle class. And if you weren't it was your own fault.
