19. So are the janitors, but janitors are staff not faculty.
.

3. Or the ex-coaches? Which is what Sandusky was when the alleged crimes took place.
It was in Penn State buildings, though.

5. He was a retired coach with a pleasant package that included an office
in the football facilities.

6. He had emeritus status which pretty much means he has free reign to the campus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Sandusky_child_sexual_abuse_scandal#Background

Sandusky was a defensive coordinator for Penn State and Joe Paterno for 23 seasons. He also founded The Second Mile, a children's charity, in State College, Pennsylvania in 1977.<2> Sandusky, who in 1998 was also the target of a then unreported university investigation into child sexual abuse,<3> and who had been often rumored as the successor to Paterno as head coach, retired in 1999 to the surprise of many at the time.<4> At his retirement, Sandusky was given status as coach emeritus, as well as an office in, and access to, Penn State's football facilities.

7. He had the title of Assistant Professor Emeritus at the time
It's an amusing title, since you're usually only given an emeritus title after you've reached the rank of professor, but it is, I guess, technically considered retired faculty.

4. Maybe not faculty in the traditional sense. A better question is who signs their paychecks?
The answer to that question is the party responsible.

8. I don't think so
If Paterno were faculty, for instance, he'd have tenure and it would have been harder to fire him.

15. Not necessarily. Most tenure contracts have
a "moral turpitude" clause which basically allows the administration to fire them for gross immoral acts, which would include sex with students, cheating, covering up cheating or illicit acts, etc., etc.

14. Define faculty
This interested me so I looked it up at my alma mater.

It seems at least some of the coaches / athletic directors hold titular academic titles / ranks as deans / dept chairs / assistant prof or lower. None are tenure-track, but are considered faculty the same as GA's, writer-in-residence, etc.

9. Tragically,
this will never be why the rioters are rioting. They just had the privilege of being a world-class football school yanked out from under their feet. That's what they're mad about.

Maybe when they grow up, they'll get some perspective.

10. "Faculty"? Give me a friggin' break. More like playground
supervisors.

This country is so fucked up and this is one proof. Mixing a stupid game with higher education and expecting us to take it seriously? IIRC, Columbia U ended all Division 1 athletics. Any institution of higher education that took its missions seriously would do the same yesterday.

12. Coaches are media stars, not faculty.
Any mere professor would have been canned, and his career left in ruins, on the basis of an accusation without a hearing. Actually, if he had been found with porn on his computer, that would probably be grounds enough for termination.

13. Faculty? I thought ONE GUY in the football program was the rapist.
It's a bit of a stretch to suggest that the entire teaching staff is fucking little kids.

17. I thought they were members of the board, not teachers.
I find the whole damn mess pretty disgraceful, no matter who was doing the covering-up. They all should be ashamed of themselves.
