Standoff Between Cops at Occupy Berkeley & Occupy Harvard Live
Edited on Thu Nov-10-11 01:40 AM by sabrina 1
Occupiers at both Berkeley and Harvard have been facing blockades all night. Harvard protesters intended to set up camp in Harvard Yard but were locked out. They agreed to proceed by climbing walls if necessary and the last I saw, they had managed to set up a few tents.

Many Harvard Alumni have ended up on Wall Street.

From Berkeley earlier today

Livestream from Berkeley http://www.livestream.com/globalrevolution/

Someone has been hurt but not much information on who or how badly. They are calling for an ambulance.

Still calling for a medic, a few people injured the protester says, he's losing his voice.

The Nation's live-blogger, Greg Mitchel has been following the events at Berkeley.

Live Blogging Occupy Berkeley

12:25 Police attack at Berkeley, beatings and injuries, wild screaming, tents removed, students remain, more arrests to come? See livestream:

12:10 Harvard Crimson covers tonight's ongoing standoff there in Harvard Year, now occupied.

12:05 am SF Chronicle wrapup of the conflict at Berkeley (so far) today. Also tonight: Occupyers shout down Oakland city council after they call for dismantling camp. Some council member respond by chanting "Occupy Oakland Must Go!"

From late Wednesday

11:30 Standoffs continue at Berkeley and Harvard (see below) as idiots rally for Paterno at Penn State. Harvard Yard now occupied with 16 tents, according to David House. Berkeley speaker says, "We're too big to jail." Man, I spent weeks and weeks at Berkeley campus researching two books, loved it and this brings back (fond) memories.

10:55 More tension: dramatic livestream of Berkeley students getting ready for police attack after long day or conflict and arrests and alleged beating. And go here to see dramatic video from earlier of police swinging batons at students. Plus still deadlock at Harvard in standoff, as Divinity students from shield around occupyers.

From Harvard tonight.

There have been arrests at both Harvard and Berkeley.

Occupy Protest Shuts Down Harvard Yard

UPDATED 11:05 p.m. 11/9/11

About 350 protesters sympathetic to the Occupy movement descended on Harvard Yard Wednesday night with a message of disapproval for the University’s perceived complicity in growing income inequality across the country.

The protest was scheduled to take place in the Yard but was relocated to the Harvard Law School campus because of increased security around the Yard.

Harvard University Police officers and Securitas guards stationed at the gates leading into the Yard closed several entrances and did not admit individuals without a Harvard ID.

Cambridge Police officers are currently monitoring traffic and attempting to keep protesters out of the way of passing vehicles.

Big difference between these people's priorities and those at Penn State tonight.

Adding to this, there were two more standoffs, both in Alabama today.

Berkeley is still tense. The livestream narrator is saying they 'came in with batons etc and 'beat the crap out of people'.

Right now the police are lined up in front of a building with what looks like a big crowd still chanting, in front of them.

It's about 2.36 AM now, and there are still about 3,000 people in Berkeley. They are going to recruit more students tomorrow at 10.00 AM.

They are holding a GA at 6.00 PM tomorrow evening.

They are saying, on the livestream, that there are close to 3,000 still there. The scene is on the livestream and it does look like a big crowd.

6. I haven't seen much TV but what a surprise that they would
not be covering this, but the big Sports story instead, that is so much more important than the deterioration of this entire country. And the courageous students who are out there trying to do something about it.

Thanks for making that point, Nadin. Going to check your link.

4. WTF? you need permits & permission to protest the government?
Seems insane to have to have permission from the government that you're protesting.

Just an excuse to scorch the eyeballs of people who refuse to accept what has happened.

5. I think they made that up on the spot from what I could
tell earlier. Those students are brave though, they were determined to do what they came to do.

It IS crazy that you would need a permit to demonstrate. I think that is the reason so many of the occupiers are now taking this issue to court. They were successful in Cleveland and Nashville, where the courts ruled that the protesters should not be arrested, even if there were local ordinances being violated, as 'the Constitution trumps local and state ordinances'.

They have OPD there, he is saying those people do not belong there and the mayor is making a huge mistake by bringing in outside police.

47. OK, here's a situation where this horizontal non-leadership
structure is failing. If Oakland cops are in Berkeley, Occupy Oakland ought to be out in the streets in full force pulling the Oakland police AWAY from Berkeley and back to Oakland. Thus relieving the pressure on Occupy Berkeley.

This HAS to get more co-ordinated. There is SO MUCH that could be done to help each other against this repression if we would CO-ORDINATE it.

42. Thank you for those photos.
It's now after midnight and they are all still there, holding a GA, and they are talking about a General Strike on Monday. It would be a strike of Higher Education.

Workers wouldn't work, students wouldn't go to class. They are calling also for a solidarity strike in schools and work places.

They have talked to Unions also they said earlier and will work with them.

I love the second echo, which they need because so many people are there.

The chat room is saying that ABC is covering it and doing a very fair job for once.

So, Oakland sent their cops to Berkeley? No wonder there were injuries earlier. The narrator is delivering a message to the Mayor of Oakland. Didn't she complain that the protests were costing Oakland money? But they send their cops to other towns? That sounds like those cops are trained, militarized, for the purpose of suppressing these kinds of protests.

They declared it an 'unlawful assembly' and have told them to go home or get arrested.

The MEDIA HAS LEFT! Same as Oakland on the 25th. The Media cut their livestream right before the police attacked! So the media is cooperating with the police, by NOT filming them attacking.

40. I agree, Kaleko. Europe is definitely on the brink of collapse
They exposed themselves completely over the past couple of weeks, as far as no longer even pretending to respect the sovereignty of the democracies that are part of the EU. What a scam they've running and the people know now. They created a Global Royalty and had zero concern for the people. Asia, South America, the ME, Africa, all have been victims, and now Europe and here.

I've been following a British blogger for a few months now, an economist, and he's said all along that there would be a second collapse. He's been giving day by day, blow by blow accounts as things happen, and seems to have some inside sources all over Europe.

He has a VERY good blog entry on the Greek and Italian leadership "resigning" and bankers being appointed to fill in. He made the analogy that it would be like Wall Street demanding that Obama be replaced because he wasn't instituting austerity fast enough and Alan Greenspan being appointed POTUS.

Some of the criminals, if not all, who were there when Scott Olsen was hit in the face, were Alameda County Sheriffs. You can clearly see the word "Sheriff" on their riot shields as they stood in line behind Scott.
