3. The problem is when people go to college for the sake of feeling they need a degree...
College is not cut out for everyone. What the OP illustrates is that as the economy turns south it will trim the uneeded fat from ranks of society... the professions that are actually useful/valuable will endure. Just like any culture, golden-ages do not last forever.

Just because you can get a loan and an acceptance letter does not mean your're college material. But for some reason society brainwashes people into thinking people need "a degree" at all costs - often to the cost of tens of thousands of dollars. I can't tell you how many truly "undecided" majors there are through the first & second years of college. Often, students like this end up taking "fluff majors" that have no real technical or useful background... they are litterally just paying for the piece of paper rather than useful raining/education. And colleges, ALL of which are in the business of making money, are all too happy to soak up the grants and tution (whether it's coming out of peoples pockets or federal loans)... hey could care less if the piece of paper you earned is worth even a fraction of what you paid for it.

Look down the list in the OP with a different frame of reference - can you see a theme here?
1. Math/Analysis
2. Science
3. Educatoin
4. Science
5. Medical
6. Education
7. Math/Analysis
8. Medical
9. Science

4. I wonder how many undergraduate Astronomy and
Astrophysics went straight to the workforce? I got to think most of them went straight to grad school. I bet a bunch of PhDs are kicking around post doc hell now.

Typically Ed Admin and Supervision is a degree that teachers get to move into administration. My daughter's best teacher (Algebra) got this degree and was groomed to administration. He is an Associate Principal now and well on his way to Principal. I hated losing him to the classroom, but he dramatically increased his salary with the move.

Medical Technology Technician gives you good bang for your buck. Typically an Associates program.
