(((PICS))) Sandusky - Out of the Picture
State College artist Michael Pilato paints over the portion of his mural that shows former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky in downtown State College, Pennsylvania, November 9, 2011. Sandusky was charged with 40 counts of child sex abuse on November 5. Penn State University head football coach Joe Paterno said on Wednesday he will retire at the end of the 2011 season following a scandal over allegations a former assistant coach, Sandusky, sexually abused boys and school officials covered it up.

2. I never did understand sports, "big sports", aggressive testosterony sports, pro sports, etc...
...but especially in educational institutions.

It's not like many of them are REALLY DOING A GREAT FUCKING JOB at educating our kids.

A few are, sure, but not that many.

x(

When you're putting out skilled, knowledgeable, enlightened CITIZENS... well, then maybe you can have some big team sports for your sporty people.

Until then, these murals and riots and bullshit just make me sad.

14. true, you don't understand
If Joe Paterno were just a football coach, I doubt you'd see people defending him as much.

He did indeed put out "skilled, knowledgeable, enlightened CITIZENS." Thanks to Paterno, there's a new Democratic officeholder in New Jersey:

And five decades of former players who went on to achieve their dreams will be here to remind us of how Paterno affected their lives. On Tuesday, Adam Taliaferro -- the former Penn State cornerback who was paralyzed by a hit in 2000 and at whose bedside Paterno held vigil when Taliaferro was told he may never walk again -- was elected to public office in Gloucester, N.J. There are thousands of other men currently excelling in their chosen fields who would be quick to share how their experience under Paterno helped them get there.

Paterno won 409 games and two national championships, but he also helped transform a rural college in a remote Pennsylvania town into a nationally respected institution. It may sound disingenuous now in light of current events, but "The Grand Experiment" -- Paterno's self-professed vision upon his 1966 hiring to prove that a program could excel both on and off the field -- served as a model for coaches of all levels of every sport for decades thereafter.

He used his platform to raise awareness for the plight of black athletes in the 1960s and '70s; he was a constant advocate of NCAA reform; he spent 40 years pushing (unsuccessfully) for a college football playoff; his early '90s push for Penn State to join the Big Ten -- a seemingly bizarre move at the time -- proved to be visionary; and he was the impetus for the Big Ten (and in turn the rest of college football) implementing instant replay.

In 1986, Sports Illustrated named Paterno its Sportsman of the Year. Rick Reilly's accompanying article included the following anecdote: While recruiting sought-after defensive tackle Bob White, Paterno put a condition on his scholarship offer: White would agree to read a dozen novels over the spring and summer before his enrollment and file a two-page book report every week.

18. You are right
My thought is that there is nothing that isn't both light and dark, especially human beings.

Often, sports brings about other positive things in its wake. And you don't have to be in the sports world to make the same, devistating mistake Joe Paterno made in not going to the police.

The plain truth is that a lot of people wouldn't support the existance of public universities without athletics, a lot of people aren't enlightened enough to see the pure benefits of learning and supporting that with tax dollars. At least athletics can open the door to an appreciation for the true mission of higher education. We have to work with what we have in our culture.

19. thanks
None of the stuff in the excerpt I posted *excuses* Paterno's failure to do the right thing about Sandusky. But I hope it helps people to understand why those of us who know about his life have complicated feelings this week.

20. I feel for Penn State fans right now
I have a lot of love for my alma mater and am a big sports fan also, and we basically don black hats every basketball season (Univ of KY), LOL.

Penn State football has always been seen as a class act, and has helped the university. This coming out is a hard blow when there hasn't even ever been any recruiting violations. I hope they get another great coach (and replace the President) quickly so that the school can start to move forward again. The students causing the ruckus are between 18 and 21 years old and they are confused and upset. That gets lost in the coverage.

7. How very Soviet. Non-person status...
Sandusky is a criminal pervert, and his actions are unconscionable, but I'm uncomfortable with the erasing of history.

However, the artist is living and he updates that particular mural on a regular basis.

Wonder if Paterno will be altered too. He might be just as much a target for vandalism once the whole mess is played out in the courts.

...to whitewash the mural (in the literal sense here).

As blogslut mentioned, the mural is continuously revised, and Sandusky's removal is as much vandalism prevention as anything else.

26. My thoughts too, but the WHOLE PAINTING is so Soviet.
Heroes of the Proletariat Revolution, or some such, done up to look more sacred than any church mural -- looks like the same "thinking" went into this mural.

But, of course that would include St Joe.

They should just paint an orange jumpsuit and manacles on him.

we did not know. My Mom blacked him out of family pictures. He was in jail for 5 years. He wasn't just molesting her, her was taking pictures and doing online pornography. He was fired from AT&T for doing CHILD pornography AT work, and they did not inform my sister.

31. wow

Our culture's adults are so caught up in protecting themselves, they're absolutely useless at defending those who actually need protection.

 to you and yeah, I'd do the same to pictures. For a survivor of abuse, even hearing the person's name can trigger horrible flashbacks.

I wish that all of those who are expressing "aw shucks ain't that a shame warm fuzzies" for Paterno et al had even an iota of understanding of just how devastating to the soul and spirit child sexual abuse is.
