Its time to bow out for a while.

I had to go see my mechanic this morning to finish up a repair begun yesterday. He's also a friend so as I left I said "well, if I don't see you in about a week and a half I guess I won't be seeing you". I guess I should say the same thing here.

I have cancer. There is a tumor that has spread out in my gut and its going to be cut out of me monday. We are leaving later today for Cleveland where a full day of tests and such is scheduled for tomorrow followed by a weekend in that fine city. I am told that my chances of surviving the operation are about 50/50. Presuming I do survive the cut - and I am making that presumption - I am told I will be in recovery at the hospital for about a week.

So I guess I'll tell you all the same thing I told Darrell this morning, if I don't see you all in about a week and a half I guess I won't be seeing you.

Before I go let me thank a whole bunch of you all for great conversation and for stimulating both thought and action. You are truly a community, and community is everything.

A good friend, for some four decades, got a shit diagnosis of cancer about a year and a half ago. He did everything right up to that point, too--colonoscopies, regular checkups, eating healthy/organic/nearly vegetarian, religious when it came to exercise, the whole schmear.

To his shock, he was diagnosed with cancer--stage four--with a massive tumor that was, in essence, hiding behind his colon. It was a big un and the doctors were mystified as to how they could have missed it. His prognosis wasn't good. He was told to review his will, etc.

He got buckets of chemo/radiation--all sorts of treatments that made him feel like absolute shit at times-- after his surgery. It was touch and go for the longest time. He was up. He was down. He was positive. He was bummed. He hung in there. He beat it.

He's in good shape now--still has to be checked every few months, he's got to deal with one of those bags, but it's looking like he's going to be OK. Don't give up hope. Take great care of yourself, and laugh often. You may not feel like spending a lot of time on the internet, but check in every so often and let us know how you're doing.
