One of the questions surrounding the sex-abuse case against Jerry Sandusky is why a former district attorney chose not to prosecute the then-Penn State assistant coach in 1998 after reports surfaced that he had inappropriate interactions with a boy.


The answer is unknowable because of an unsolved mystery: What happened to Ray Gricar, the Centre County, Pa., district attorney?

Gricar went missing in April 2005. The murky circumstances surrounding his disappearance — an abandoned car, a laptop recovered months later in a river without a hard drive, his body was never found — have spawned Web sites, television programs and conspiracy theories. More than six years later, the police still receive tips and reports of sightings. The police in central Pennsylvania continue to investigate even though Gricar’s daughter, Lara, successfully petitioned in July to have her father declared legally dead so the family could find some closure and begin dividing his estate.

1. Can someone explain something about this...

What happened now that brought this whole thing to the forefront? Was Sandusky just recently arrested for these crimes? Did none of the victims come forward prior to now or was there just no evidence or was everything that suppressed?

I don't know a thing about football, college or otherwise and until this happened didn't even know the name Joe Paterno so please forgive my ignorance on the issue. I can really only read so much of this stuff, as it's particularly stomach churning.

2. Sandusky was just arrested a few days ago, that's when the scandal went public.

First complaints date back to 1998, and Paterno was informed of an incident in 2002. Sandusky now charged by eight victims' families.

3. Again - What Went On Between 1998 And Now.....

Was somebody investigating this all this time? What precipitated Sandusky's arrest now? Why did the University wait until yesterday to fire all these people? And will this open a new investigation in the death of this DA mentioned in another thread?

Did no victims go to the polic prior to last week? Or were these accussations that suppressed and the victims that marginalized?

Someone else posted a John Madded column about this (well alluding to the details) from back in April. So obviously this was something that a lot of people caught wind of.
